King Charles Urged to 'Stand Up to Bullies' After Trump Takes Another Swipe at the UK: 'Spineless'
As Donald Trump mocks UK military strength, King Charles faces a fierce 'backbone' test over his upcoming trip to Washington.
Buckingham Palace’s confirmation of King Charles’ upcoming state visit to the United States has ignited a firestorm of public outrage, with critics going as far as to brand the mission a ‘spineless’ move. Scheduled for late April, the historic trip marks the first time a British monarch has visited America in nearly twenty years — a significant milestone for the monarchy. The timing of the announcement, however, has left many Britons demanding that the King stay home, particularly just after Donald Trump launched a scathing social media attack on the UK. A diplomatic row broke out following a series of provocative posts by the US President on Truth Social — the primary catalyst for the current friction.
Trump singled out the UK during his address on the ongoing Middle East conflict, pointing to the country’s refusal to participate in strikes against Iran. He had suggested that allies who “refused to get involved in the decapitation of Iran” should “build up some delayed courage,” challenging them to secure the Strait of Hormuz on their own. To add more fuel to the fire, he also added that the UK would “have to start learning how to fight” for itself. Despite these public insults, the government headed by Prime Minister Keir Starmer has advised Charles to proceed with the visit, sparking fierce condemnation from various political leaders and royal watchers alike.
As reported by The Express, Sir Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats, accused Starmer of a “staggering lack of backbone,” claiming the government is “too weak to stand up to bullies” while Trump treats the UK with “contempt.” The same sentiment was echoed by senior Labour MP Dame Emily Thornberry as well, who suggested that to avoid the King and Queen feeling “embarrassed” by the ongoing geopolitical crisis, it would be “safer to delay” the upcoming state visit. The reaction of Britons has been even more intense. As news of the visit broke, social media was flooded with calls for Charles to snub the White House in protest of the US President’s rhetoric.
Sharing his thoughts, X, a user wrote, “Time to reverse course, and shut all American bases too whilst you're at it,” while another netizen lamented that “the UK should have had good relations with Europe instead.” A third individual sneered, “I don't think our King has a backbone. Why would someone be in the presence of a person who insults our country & military… It's totally beyond me.” A fourth user noted they hope the King cancels at the last minute — joking that he should tell Trump, “he’s sorry he can’t go because he’s washing his hair.” Summing it up, a fifth user observed, “The country doesn’t want this visit to happen, but when did that bother this Government. Spineless is the word I’m looking for.”
Despite the mounting pressure, Buckingham Palace has confirmed that Charles and Queen Camilla will proceed with the tour to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence. The itinerary includes a state dinner at the White House with the King, also set to deliver a historic address to Congress.
