Even royals enjoy extravagant gifts when it comes to birthdays. With Princess Kate’s 44th birthday falling this week, a former Palace aide suggests she could mark the big day with a meaningful heirloom from her father-in-law, King Charles. Speaking in a recent interview, former butler of the royal household Grant Harrold has suggested that it will be a low-key affair centered on family rather than spectacle. Despite Kate’s high-profile role, Harrold suggested that celebrations in the royal fold are usually modest, even for senior royals. However, her present may make up for the understated event.

Kate’s birthday falls on January 9, and just like every year, this time around as well, the royals will privately gather around to mark the occasion. In an interview with Heart Bingo, Harrold explained that it will be a small affair with “more of an intimate family dinner.” He opined, “All royal birthdays are celebrated in some shape and form, even if the birthdays aren't big celebrations." Harrold also explained that when he was working for Charles, the monarch would certainly throw a ‘private dinner,’ adding, “It wouldn't be a big family gathering, it'd just be a private dinner.” He expects a similar approach for Kate as well, who will most likely spend her birthday at Forest Lodge along with Prince William and her kids, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.

While the setting may be close-knit, Harrold believes that the monarch will still make the effort to mark the day. “I can almost guarantee that the King will still host a birthday party for his daughter-in-law,” he suggested, also adding, “It’s possible that it will be on the actual day of the birthday, unless William's got something private arranged.” The former butler added that it’ll be a beautiful celebration with the Princess of Wales eating some of her favorite foods. When it comes to presents, it’s a well-known fact that the royals love gifting gag gifts to make each other laugh. This time around as well, Harrold suggests, “You might get something a little bit silly because the royals like to give silly presents.” However, he insists, the King might give his daughter-in-law something far more precious, like an "heirloom".

Harrold suggests that Charles and Camilla may give a joint present with a deeper meaning. “It could be a hand-me-down from his mother. It could be something from his private collection of things that he likes to give family members... things that are sentimental to him,” he noted. While a lot of family heirlooms do not personally belong to the King, “he could still give something that remains in the Royal Collection.” Over the years, the King has gifted his daughter-in-law generously.

The monarch gave Kate a set of Art Deco diamond jewelry as her wedding gift in 2011, featuring a bracelet, drop earrings, and a ring, which the Princess has worn frequently for over a decade. Then, in late 2022, shortly after he ascended the throne, Charles gifted Kate a new military role and appointed her as the Colonel of the Irish Guards. Then he has also reportedly bestowed on Kate the role of Grantor of Royal Warrants, set to come into effect in spring 2026. This will also make her the first Princess of Wales to grant Royal Warrants in over 116 years, with Queen Mary being the last one to do so in 1910.
