King Charles Had the Perfect Comeback After an Onlooker Mocked His Cake-Cutting Skills — Watch
While King Charles neatly cut the cake, the wobbling plate underneath nearly sent the sponge flying — prompting an onlooker to joke about it.
King Charles has clearly inherited his late mother's sense of humor, showing time and again he can take a joke with a pinch of salt. He did exactly that during his May 21 visit to the Warehouse Community Center, where he cut a cake as part of the engagement. While he did a decent job, the wobbling plate underneath nearly sent the sponge sliding off the table. When an onlooker joked it could still be served with crackers, Charles fired back with a cheeky quip, proving once again that he's never one to miss the punchline.
Charles and Queen Camilla were attempting to serve a slice to volunteers and staff in Northern Ireland when things went slightly off script. In a video shared on X, after the couple received thunderous applause, a woman spotted the wobbling plate and joked that a messy cake would be paired best with crackers. To which Charles quipped, "Have you had that for your lunch?" Looking closer at the sponge, he gushed, "It does look very good." Before the cake cutting, Charles was helping the kitchen staff stir a gluten-free chocolate cake mix and warmly engaging with them. Watch the video here!
During the interaction with staff, the Head Chef at the center, Dawn Stewart, guided the King as he whisked up the cake mix. As reported by HELLO!, she later said, "His [Charles's] mixing was very good. I was very impressed." Chiming in, Operations manager at the Warehouse, Megan Weimann, added, "Our chefs make everything, from starters, main courses, and dessert, and we serve lunch Tuesday to Thursday, and then breakfast on a Friday. The King very kindly agreed to make a chocolate cake for us. So, it was great." The former pub has been turned into a volunteer-run center that provides free meals and food supplies to those in need.
It seems cake-cutting isn't really Charles's forte, as he has struggled with it before during the 25th anniversary of The Eden Project on March 24. At the time, he decided to mix things up by borrowing a ceremonial sword from Colonel Sir Edward Bolitho. However, the cake was surprisingly tough to cut, even with a huge sword, and his attempt turned into a bit of a struggle. When Camilla pulled the sword back out, she burst out laughing after noticing it was covered in batter. Rather than being embarrassed about it, they simply shrugged it off, making the whole moment pretty relatable.
