King Charles and Queen Camilla’s Sweet Milestone Moment Brings Back Memories of Queen Elizabeth
A playful cake-cutting moment from Charles and Camilla is bringing back memories of Queen Elizabeth’s unforgettable royal outing.
The 25th anniversary of the Eden Project in Cornwall on March 24, 2026, turned into a pretty fun outing for King Charles and Queen Camilla. A standard cake-cutting ceremony quickly took a more playful turn when the royal couple did something rather strange. Instead of reaching for a regular knife, the couple decided to mix things up by borrowing a ceremonial sword.
For the unversed, the Eden Project is an eco attraction in Cornwall, which was established in March 2001. It is built on what used to be a clay pit, and now it is home to two huge enclosed biomes along with expansive outdoor gardens.
During the cake-cutting event, Charles and Camilla decided to mix things up by borrowing a ceremonial sword from Colonel Sir Edward Bolitho. They could not stop laughing when it was handed to them, and together they sliced into the beautifully made cake by Cornish baker Niki Lowe. But things did not go quite as planned. The cake was surprisingly tough, and their attempt turned into a bit of a struggle. Rather than playing it off, the royal couple just laughed through it, making the whole moment honestly pretty relatable.
In a video shared by the royal reporter Rebecca English on Instagram, the crowd broke into applause. Charles grinned and jokingly pretended to stab the cake with the sword. When Camilla pulled it back out, she burst out laughing after noticing it was covered in cake, before it was quickly wiped clean.
The late Queen Elizabeth had a pretty similar moment back in 2021 when she visited the Eden Project. At 95, when she was asked to cut a celebratory cake, she went straight for a large ceremonial sword. And when someone suggested maybe using something a bit more practical, she just waved it off and stuck with the sword anyway. She quipped, “I know there is [a knife]. This is something that is more unusual.” The comment drew smiles and laughter from Princess Kate and Camilla, who had joined her during the outing. “That looks very good,” the Queen said after successfully cutting a slice.
Coming back to the visit, Charles and Camilla also took some time to promote a new volunteer drive called The Big Help Out, an initiative to get people across the UK to pitch in with simple, eco-friendly things like community gardening or helping clean up local spaces. Along the way, they also unveiled a plaque to mark the Eden Project’s milestone anniversary.
But it was not just a formal visit. They also got to try something a little different, a huge wooden marble run that stretches over 300 feet, made from timber collected after winter storms in Cornwall, which made the whole thing feel very on-theme for the visit.
