King Charles Extends a Generous Olive Branch to Harry and Meghan ― but Their Response Is Unexpected
The King is reportedly eager to reconnect with Archie and Lilibet, but Harry and Meghan have yet to make a decision.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will be traveling to the UK next month, and are expected to bring their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, for the visit as well. In a move that seems poignant and generous, King Charles has allegedly extended an olive branch to the Sussexes by offering them the use of a royal residence during their upcoming visit. This gesture — rooted in a desire to bridge the distance of the past four years and foster a long-awaited reunion with his grandchildren — marks a significant effort by the monarch to prioritize familial connection amidst the ongoing complexities of royal life. However, the reaction from the Duke and Duchess is completely unexpected.
The Daily Mail reported that Prince Harry and Markle have yet to confirm their stay, a gesture that totally underplays the King's efforts. Notably, Prince Harry has turned down offers from King Charles to stay at Buckingham Palace during his visits to the UK in 2024 and January 2025, citing security concerns. He reportedly expressed at the time that the palace's exposed entrances and exits would leave him vulnerable, leading him to choose accommodations in hotels or private homes instead. Under the current arrangement, the duke's security is assessed individually, requiring him to inform the government of his travel plans in advance. Prince Harry has previously expressed concerns that, without adequate state-backed protection, his children are at risk.
While the Duke and Duchess are yet to respond, chatters have also intensified as to where this reunion will take place. Royal author Ingrid Seward told The Mirror that Balmoral is the only suitable location for the King to meet his grandchildren, as it is the only time he has available, and the Sussexes can be accommodated there due to the number of cottages available on the estate. The Aberdeenshire estate in Scotland has long served as the royal family's private retreat, giving the security and solitude required for a potential emotional reunion. "Harry and Meghan don't have to stay in the castle, although of course they would expect to, but that's fine," she said. "They would make sure, obviously, that William and Kate weren't there at the same time. So it's not that difficult, and it can be done fairly under the radar." Prince Harry last visited Balmoral in September 2022 without Markle after the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
Ingrid pointed out that any Balmoral reunion would require meticulous planning to avoid tensions within the royal fold. She believes the King would purposefully select attendees, claiming that the Prince and Princess of Wales would be excluded, and that she would be "absolutely astounded" if they happened to be there on the King's invitation. The Sussexes are visiting the UK with their two children to participate in events celebrating the one-year countdown to the 2027 Invictus Games. This trip marks the first visit for the Duchess and their children since Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee in 2022.
