King Charles Announces Major Overseas Tour ― And It Marks the End of a 39-Year Wait
After a triumphant US trip earlier this year, King Charles is already planning his next big visit abroad.
Earlier this year, King Charles undertook a hectic and highly sensitive tour to the US, in an attempt to mend the UK’s strained ties with the country. He privately met with President Donald Trump to discuss the matter and became only the second British monarch to address Congress, after the late Queen Elizabeth. The King completed what was touted as the most significant state visit as a sovereign with flying colors. After a triumphant US trip, he went on a solo tour to the Bermuda Islands, marking his first solo trip to a British Overseas Territory as a monarch. And now, Charles is set to travel abroad on a big state visit once again. However, it won’t be this year.
The King will visit Spain in 2027, along with Queen Camilla. The dates of the tour have not been confirmed so far, as per reports. The visit will certainly mark a new era for British and Spanish royalty. This trip will mark the UK’s first visit to Spain since 1988 and will have different monarchs on the throne this time. The late Queen and Prince Phillip had met King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia when the former couple had visited Spain. Next year, Charles and Camilla will likely be welcomed by King Felipe and Queen Letizia. Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia might also join the party if there’s a state banquet.
Spain and England share a long history. Felipe and Letizia were present at Charles’ coronation in 2023, and also attended the reception hosted at Buckingham Palace for overseas guests. The two Kings had previously met at Clarence House in 2022, and seemed to get along really well. Felipe and Letizia had also attended the late Queen’s funeral and viewed her coffin during the Lying-in-State at Westminster Hall.
The Spanish monarchs had travelled to the UK for a state visit in 2017 and were received with full honors at Horse Guards Parade. A state dinner was also organized for them at Buckingham Palace, which was also attended by Prince William and Kate Middleton. Felipe gave a speech before the Houses of Parliament. Whether Charles will do the same when he visits Spain next year is not yet revealed.
The announcement of Charles’ state visit to Spain couldn’t have come at a better time. Last weekend, the Spanish men’s soccer team took home the FIFA World Cup for the second time in history, after beating defending champions Argentina 1-0. Many British soccer fans were reportedly cheering for Spain in the final, as England had lost the semi-finals against Argentina last week. The English side eventually placed third after defeating France in a thrilling bout on Saturday.
Charles has certainly undertaken rather huge duties as a monarch this week. On Monday, he welcomed Andy Burnham as the new Prime Minister of the UK, and has now announced his trip to Spain next year.
