King Charles and Queen Camilla Visit 9/11 Memorial to Start New York Tour on Solemn Note
The monarchs also met with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani at the 9/11 memorial.
King Charles and Queen Camilla are on a visit to the US to mend ties between the US and the UK, when the world is going through a turbulent time. The royal couple met President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump, before the King addressed the Congress and reached out to people across the globe. The monarchs then visited New York and spent some solemn moments in the Big Apple. King Charles and Queen Camilla made it a point to visit the 9/11 memorial and honor the victims of the tragedy with a wreath-laying ceremony.
The royal couple arrived at the scene in a motorcade and were greeted by various dignitaries. Accompanied by the former Mayor of the city, Michael Bloomberg, Charles and Camilla walked up to the waterfall pools, which mark the site of the original Twin Towers. The King laid a wreath on one of the parapets that bears the names of all the victims. The current Mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani, was also present at the ceremony, along with other dignitaries. The monarchs also met the first responders and the families of the victims of the 9/11 attacks.
They also reportedly spent time talking to the receiving line, where they were greeted with several New York City and Tri-State luminaries, including Governors Kathy Hochul and Mikie Sherill, as well as Mamdani. Charles and Camilla have a busy day ahead of themselves in New York, which they will spend separately for the most part, before travelling to Virginia for their final day in the US.
After visiting the 9/11 memorial, Camilla is expected to go to the New York Public Library, where she will deliver a new Roo doll as an addition to the library’s famous collection of Winnie the Pooh stuffed animals. The beloved children’s character, created by English author A.A.Milne, will turn 100 this year.
Charles, on the other hand, is scheduled to visit a grassroots community organization that mentors children and young people affected by food insecurity, a cause close to the King’s heart. He will also be meeting leaders from the domain of business and finance in Manhattan. This is the first time since 2010 that a British monarch has visited New York. The last sovereign to do this was, of course, his mother Queen Elizabeth II.
King Charles and Queen Camilla had spent the first two days of their rigorous four-day US tour in Washington, DC, with US President Donald Trump and First Lady, Melania Trump. After the conclusion of their US state visit, the King will go on a solo trip to Bermuda, which will mark his first visit to a British Overseas Territory as a monarch.
