King Charles and Queen Camilla End Four-Day Tour of America With a Block Party
King Charles and Queen Camilla split their final Virginia schedule to honor shared U.S.-UK passions before departing for London.
The four-day state visit to the United States has been a diplomatic success for King Charles and Queen Camilla. After Washington and New York, the couple are heading to Virginia to take part in events commemorating America’s 250th anniversary of independence. The final stretch of the tour comes after several major engagements that have helped reinforce the ‘special relationship’ and strengthen diplomatic ties with the Trump administration. While much of the week was about traditional ceremonies and statecraft, the final events have taken a more informal tone. Upon arriving at a community block party celebrating American cuisine and entertainment, the royal couple first greeted players from the Front Royal Little League baseball team.
The Virginia engagements will act as a symbolic closing chapter to a tour that started with a widely watched speech before Congress. In that address, the monarch paid tribute to America’s founders, calling them “bold and imaginative rebels with a cause.” Before departing, Charles and Camilla will split their schedules to highlight causes that reflect their long-standing personal interests. The monarch is scheduled to visit one of America’s national parks, where he will meet with local indigenous representatives and conservationists. This reflects his long-standing commitment to environmental protection, a theme he also referenced during his speech before Congress.
At the same time, Camilla will turn her attention to a local farm celebrating America’s heritage of horse racing. This event will reflect the strong equestrian traditions linking Britain and the US, an area that remains especially meaningful to the Queen. While much of the tour has carried the glamour expected of a royal state visit, several moments have struck a more solemn tone. On the third day of the visit, the royal couple paid tribute at the 9/11 Memorial, where they laid flowers and left a message pledging their “enduring solidarity with the American people.”
On the same day, the King also turned his attention toward the King’s Trust, hosting a gala at Christie’s house, which included guests like Anna Wintour, Lionel Richie, and Stella McCartney, to name a few. The King has carefully balanced diplomacy and humor throughout the visit. Though The New York Times pointed to ‘subtle rebuttals’ in his congressional address concerning Ukraine and the rule of law, the monarch embraced a far lighter tone during the New York gathering. “I hesitate to make another speech because I may have had enough,” he joked at the gala.
With the royal tour nearing its conclusion, King Charles returned to the White House, where President Trump offered a personal goodbye to his ‘friend’, going as far as to declare that the monarch is the ‘greatest King in his book. He further said that the King and Queen are “Great people,” also noting, “We need more people like that in our country.” Following the grand farewell, Charles and Camilla headed straight to the Arlington National Cemetery at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The couple is expected to depart for London late this evening following their final celebrations in Virginia.
