King Charles and Prince Harry have reportedly not met since the Duke's return to the UK last month. Although the King had set a private meeting with his younger son's family in July, their relationship continues to exhibit noticeable tension. Recently, the monarch clarified the Sussexes' private citizen status by issuing a guidance letter, which the couple claimed they were not consulted about in advance. Weighing in on the issue, a royal expert noted that the spat tarnished a poignant day and exposed the royal dynamics publicly.

"Today marks four years since the death of Queen Elizabeth II, a woman who spent 70 years on the throne never making anything about herself," royal commentator Tom Sykes stated, referring to September 8th being the late Queen's fourth death anniversary. The contents of the letter were made public a day before.

"It should be a day for remembering her. Instead, thanks to Prince Harry, and I would argue the King, we have all been dragged into a squalid little argument between the duke, his father, and his father’s staff, after Harry’s office told the BBC the couple was ‘surprised’ by it," he highlighted to Page Six. Sykes further revealed that a source close to the Duke disclosed that the surprise was "about timing, not content." The royal commentator added that Harry is not denying his non-working status, but he is upset that his father had to "restate a known fact" without informing him beforehand.

The King's letter clarified that the Duke and Duchess will no longer perform official royal duties and will function as private citizens. It also highlighted that since January 2020, they have not been working as Members of the Royal Family and cannot adopt a "half-in and half-out" role; their charitable efforts are now personal endeavors. The letter aimed to eliminate any confusion regarding their status following their return in August.

Harry's team put forth that they received the letter around 2 p.m. UK time. He was informed about it at 3:09 p.m. and subsequently had his team respond with questions, but the letter was sent to the media just two minutes later. Meanwhile, it had been reported that the couple's move was largely influenced by Charles' health issues, a possible reconciliation, and their vision for providing better education to their children.

Meanwhile, in another blow to the Duke, Harry has attributed Uganda's withdrawal from the 2027 Invictus Games to his father's letter regarding his royal status. A source from Sussex stated that this is a consequence of the Lord Chamberlain’s guidance about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, which was issued prematurely. The source further lamented that the competitors in the Invictus Games will be the ones to suffer from the unexpected fallout.
