King Charles and Prince Harry May Finally Have Found Common Ground in a Core Issue
Despite their rift, Prince Harry and King Charles may find a middle ground as the royal family hits a bumpy road.
Prince Harry and King Charles’ relationship was on the mend since their private meeting in July, but the monarch’s recent guidance letter about the Sussexes’ lack of working royal status may have strained it again. While it is unclear where their bond stands presently, especially amid turbulent times for the King, the father-son duo may have found common ground on one environmental and social danger: Artificial Intelligence.
Days after Charles warned of the “existential dangers” the technology poses if it falls into the wrong hands, Harry spoke about AI entering “relationships” at the Clinton Global Initiative annual meeting in New York on Wednesday. “Social media learned how to capture our attention. AI is learning how to enter our relationships,” he said via Hello! His father had expressed a similar concern when he addressed AI executives during a summit at Dumfries House. He told them that their task going forward was not just to “advance technology” but also to ensure “it remains firmly in the service of humanity, community and the natural world”.
However, unfortunately, Harry had to stop his speech midway due to a technical glitch. He was left pacing the stage, unable to read the rest of his speech, before setting the microphone down and walking away. The Sussexes’ spokesperson confirmed there had been a problem with the teleprompter. Around forty minutes later, the Duke re-emerged on the stage with a funny quip about the abrupt end to his address. “Hello again. So AI got into my speech, so I was asked to come out and finish it. Interesting to see what it was so concerned about,” he joked.
While Charles and Harry’s concerns with AI were starkly different from one another, one focusing on the environmental dangers while the other doubling down on its impact on personal relationships. However, both concerns were equally valid and are currently haunting people across the globe. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have advocated for digital protection, especially for kids.
It has been a few weeks since Harry and Meghan Markle returned to the UK. But it is unclear whether they have met Charles. The monarchy is currently battling Charles Spencer’s bombshell claims about the monarch and Princess Diana’s troubled marriage in his recently released book, Swan Song. However, Harry has opted to not give a comment on the matter and has ignored such questions from the paparazzi.
While there are questions and doubts about Charles and Harry’s bond, the King proved he had his son’s back when he convinced Uganda to rejoin the Invictus Games earlier this month. There certainly could be some hope for another reunion.
