Harry’s Warning to Meghan About Royal Life Resurfaces ― And So Does the Debate Over What She Knew
A familiar clip from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s 2017 engagement interview has resurfaced, and with it a renewed wave of criticism aimed squarely at the Duchess of Sussex. The footage shows the Prince candidly discussing how he tried to prepare Markle for life inside the royal fold. As the video made its way online, critics argued she could not have been as blindsided by the pressures of the monarchy, as she has claimed on several occasions. With this, many wonder whether Harry’s warning was ever enough, or if Markle truly failed to understand what she was getting herself into before marrying the Prince.
The moment in question dates back to November 27, 2017, when Harry and Markle announced their engagement after just a year of dating. What began as a celebratory television interview quickly turned serious. Reflecting on the months following the public reveal of their relationship, the Duke of Sussex acknowledged, “No, I tried to warn you as much as possible, but I think both of us were totally surprised by the reaction after the first five, six months where we had to ourselves of what actually happened from then.” The two were totally caught off guard once the attention intensified beyond their expectations.
Harry went on to explain that conversations alone were not enough to prepare anyone for the scale of scrutiny they encountered. “So I think you can have as many conversations as you want and try and prepare as much as possible, but we were totally unprepared for what happened after that,” he said. The remark has since become a focal point for critics, some of whom argue Markle should have anticipated the pressure. Online commentary has been blunt, with critics telling OK! that "Harry literally warned her. It's not like she didn't know. Why did she end up moaning about her privacy so much?"
Markle, however, addressed those assumptions during the same interview, pushing back against the idea that her acting career had equipped her for royal life. While she had worked in the entertainment industry for years, she noted that she had never been immersed in tabloid culture or pop-culture obsession to that degree. She noted that she lived a "relatively quiet life, even though I focused so much on my job." Markle also admitted the coverage was painful, saying simply, "Of course, it's disheartening."
As per OK!, a friend of Markle insists the renewed mockery overlooks the emotional toll of those early months. They said that the Duchess has “always found it difficult that people assume she was naive,” adding, “She knew she'd face attention, but no one can really grasp what that looks like until you live through it. People mocking her now conveniently forget how relentless the early coverage was." Harry himself framed the situation as a shared challenge rather than a personal failing, stressing his sense of responsibility toward his partner. "What you're letting yourself in for – it's a big deal," he said at the time, also adding, "But I know that at the end of the day, she chooses me, and I choose her."
