Donald Trump seemed to have skipped the gentleman's playbook when he caught Queen Camilla off guard during the White House welcome at the South Lawn on April 28. As she moved down a line of dignitaries to greet them, the President stepped in, jumping the queue and shaking hands with them himself, leaving her confused. Unsurprisingly, the unchivalrous moment quickly made its rounds on the internet, leaving royal fans seriously unimpressed with his clear lapse in basic etiquette.

In a video of the gaffe posted on X, King Charles and Camilla are seen greeting a long line of influential leaders. Online broadcasts of the event showed the King shaking hands with US Vice President JD Vance and his wife, Usha; Secretary of State Marco Rubio; Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, and more. However, after greeting White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, he raised his hands in frustration, seemingly irritated at the long line, and awkwardly walked towards the stage before coming back. This left Trump with no choice but to cut Camilla, who was way behind, and greet the dignitaries on Charles's behalf. Watch the video here!

After royal fans saw the clip, they slammed the President's lack of respect for royal protocol. A netizen scoffed, "Trump cuts in front of Queen Camilla at a state event…You can't fake class." Another quipped, "I think Trump honestly believes he's meeting those folks for the first time." Meanwhile, a person opined, "Even if she wasn't a Queen and a guest, he should never do that to anyone!" As the comments poured in, a royal watcher sneered, "A breach of royal protocol, but hardly surprising given Trump's preference for seizing the spotlight." Taking a pragmatic approach, another reasoned, "The King wouldn't shake hands with the women in line, Trump saved the Queen the awkwardness and was being a perfect host."

Unsurprisingly, this is not the first time Trump has been accused of walking ahead of the line and disrespecting royal protocol. He did the same to the late Queen Elizabeth during his 2018 state visit to the UK. He was seen walking ahead and placing his back to her, putting her in a state of confusion and forcing her to navigate around him. Royal correspondent Cameron Walker has previously explained a different side to this breach, saying, "This is perhaps customary that the King, as the host, gives way to the foreign head of state who is the honored guest at Windsor Castle."

Interestingly, Trump committed another minor breach of protocol during the 2026 state visit, this time with Charles as the scapegoat. After officially welcoming the King and Queen and taking photos, they headed inside the White House for a garden party. But just as they turned to walk in, Trump gave Charles a tap on the shoulder, a small gesture that was interpreted as a rule break, as it is not allowed and looked down upon to unnecessarily touch senior royals.
