Donald Trump Welcomes King Charles — Then Breaks Protocol Moments After Arrival
Donald Trump broke royal protocol with an unexpected gesture during his first greeting with King Charles.
King Charles has commenced his U.S. visit for the first time since becoming the monarch, along with his wife, Queen Camilla. Donald Trump and Melania Trump welcome the royal couple at the White House with warm smiles. However, as Trump greets the King, he breaks royal protocol within seconds.
The King and the Queen are received by the President and the First Lady at the South Lawn on the first day of their visit to the United States. Trump greeted Charles with a firm handshake, while Melania warmly kissed Camilla on both cheeks. The two couples then stopped for photos and shared a few brief words together.
Once the photo-op wrapped up, they began heading inside the White House for a garden party. But just as they turned to walk in, Trump reached out and gave the King a quick tap on the shoulder, a small gesture that quickly caught attention. That small gesture was seen as a break from royal protocol, as there is a long-standing unwritten rule that people should not casually initiate physical contact with senior royals.
The gesture may have looked like a simple sign of warmth or affection. But body language expert Judi James told the Daily Mail (via Mirror) it could be interpreted very differently. She revealed, “This touch on the arm as they walked in also looked like a more political gesture. It was also the first real gesture of active, 'special' friendship here from a rather more subdued Trump than the very effusive rituals we saw during their last meeting [in September 2025].”
James noted that Charles did not appear bothered by the break in protocol. She explained that the King has always seemed far more relaxed about these things than his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, and said Trump’s gesture was actually quite restrained by his usual standards. She added, “This initial greeting ritual gave the surface impression of geniality, and the cheek kisses from Melania created the impression of warmth, with an almost 'family' style approach.”
King Charles and Queen Camilla’s U.S. trip runs from April 27 through April 30, with a packed lineup of major events throughout the visit. Among the most significant moments is Charles’ planned address to Congress, which is the first by a British monarch since Queen Elizabeth II. According to a palace source, he is expected to speak for around 20 minutes, focusing on major topics like NATO, the Middle East, and the war in Ukraine. Before the visit wraps up, the royal couple will also travel to Virginia, where they are expected to join celebrations for America’s 250th birthday at a community block party.
