Donald Trump Comes to King Charles’ Rescue After Rare Display of Frustration [Video]
King Charles had little patience for the seemingly endless line of leaders he was required to greet during his White House welcome.
Being the King of the United Kingdom is no easy feat. Sure, there are palaces and crowns straight out of storybooks, but none of it buys a day off from duty that never clocks out. Just ask King Charles, who displayed a rare flicker of frustration during his White House welcome at the South Lawn on April 28. Faced with a seemingly endless line of handshakes, he proceeded to greet the leaders before cutting the pleasantries short, leaving Donald Trump to meet the remaining dignitaries.
In an online broadcast of the ceremony posted on X, Charles is seen alongside a long line of leaders waiting to greet him. Relatively normal, he proceeded to shake hands with US Vice President JD Vance and his wife, Usha; Secretary of State Marco Rubio; Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, and more. However, after greeting White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, his patience wore thin, as he raised his hands in frustration and made an inaudible remark that made everyone laugh. He then made his way towards the stage before stopping and awkwardly looking on as Trump greeted the dignitaries on his behalf.
Charles's frustration seemed reasonable, as shortly after arriving in Washington, D.C., he and Queen Camilla attended a large garden party at the British Embassy. Even there, they were, once again, made to greet the more than 600 guests from both the US and the UK, where they likely met some of the same people again at the White House the next day. As reported by PEOPLE, despite their exhaustion, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson revealed that he had a conversation with Charles and found him 'very personable.' He stressed, "You can tell that he [Charles] gets along well and enjoys these events and takes it all in his stride."
It was during this meet and greet with various leaders and charity organizations that Charles met a funny man trying to impersonate him. Comedian Matt Friend humorously tested his finest English accent on the King himself. Known for his viral impressions, the CNN presenter boldly told the monarch, as shown in the clip posted on X, "I'm going to do my impersonation of you; that's not bad. I'm trying to sound like you." After his act, the King, likewise, offered a playful critique to the delight of the surrounding guests by quipping, "Keep trying."
Shortly after the pompous ceremonial welcome, Trump and Charles headed to a lavish state banquet dinner at the White House, complete with a full multi-course menu. As tradition dictates, they addressed the politicians, diplomats, and business dignitaries gathered there, speaking about the symbolic relationship between their countries. In his speech, the King carefully avoided revealing his political opinions, as is expected of a monarch to be politically neutral. Instead, he praised the President's 'steadfastness and courage' following the shooting at the White House correspondents' dinner on April 25.
