Charles Spencer Shrugs Off Royal Drama, Says Prince Harry Moving Back to England is 'Normal'
Charles Spencer explains why Prince Harry’s decision to return to Britain seems perfectly natural.
Charles Spencer has recently been looking back at his life with his elder sister, Princess Diana, while speaking candidly in interviews. Keeping up with this trend, he recently sat down with the former Vanity Fair editor, Tina Brown, at St. Peter’s Chelsea in New York City. During this conversation, he discussed his memories of his elder sister, his strained relationship with King Charles, and the pressures of royal life, alongside his new memoir, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister. Additionally, the Earl also opened up about his relationship with, and views on, his nephews, Prince William and Prince Harry.
According to PEOPLE, Spencer also discussed Harry’s recent return to the United Kingdom with Meghan Markle and their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. Brown, who has frequently criticized the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, pressed Diana’s younger brother to share his views on his nephew’s grand homecoming, asking whether he had encouraged Harry to move back. When Spencer replied that they had not discussed it, Brown threw some sass his way, saying, “Well, it’s amazing, I mean, you don’t tell them that you’re writing the book, and you didn’t discuss the most incredible decision that is going to happen, and everybody’s astounded by everybody else’s behavior.”
This was met with an expected response from Spencer, who tried to defend Harry’s choice to move back to the UK. Spencer exclaimed, “But is it astounding that an Englishman wants to move back to England? I don’t think so. Seems very normal to me!” When Brown pointed out Spencer’s own experiences with the press and the people might have made him a useful sounding board for Harry during his move, Spencer replied, “Yeah, I never intrude; I’m just a guy who’s 20 years older, just an elderly uncle who’s there if needed.”
Following this, he added, “There are things that he might talk about where I am totally happy to help, but I... I wouldn’t intrude on any of...Yeah, it’s up to somebody to share that stuff with me if they want to. I’m not sure how useful I’d have been about a property search or something.” Offering an understandable and grounded defense of his nephew, the Earl noted, “I think what’s interesting is, you forget, these are just regular people at heart, and this English guy’s lived in California; he wants to live in England. Seems normal.” It’s safe to say that for Spencer, Harry’s return is less about royal drama and more about an Englishman who just wanted to come home!
