Camilla Has the Best Reaction as Schoolchildren Repeatedly Ask 'Are You the Queen?'
Instead of laughing it off or brushing past the moment, Camilla quickly leaned into the children’s curiosity.
At first, Queen Camilla was instantly amused when children at Fane Street Primary School in south Belfast repeatedly asked her the same innocent question: “Are you the Queen?” But instead of laughing it off or brushing past the moment, Camilla quickly leaned into the children’s curiosity, gently nodding and replying, “Yes… the Queen.” She was full of warmth by doing so, and that made the exchange especially touching. The pupils looked at her with complete wonder during the cheerful visit, and the Queen appeared happy to let them enjoy the moment rather than rushing them along with other formalities. The sweet interaction instantly set the tone for the royal engagement, which was a part of Queen Camilla and King Charles III’s three-day trip to Northern Ireland. What stood out most was how gently the Queen treated the children, answering them sincerely and almost speaking to them like adults as they processed the surreal realization that they were standing face-to-face with the Queen herself. The relaxed aura continued throughout the afternoon, with Camilla radiating warmth as pupils gathered excitedly around her.
Things became even more light-hearted when the Queen met Tilly, a six-year-old Poochon therapy dog. Camilla is famously fond of dogs. The furry being enthusiastically licked her hand during the school tour. Tilly currently spends two days each week at the school after completing nine months of therapy dog training, helping support and comfort children. As per The Independent, special needs coordinator Carole-Anne Stuart later joked that the dog may have been a little “over-familiar.” She then elaborated, “She just loves people, that’s why we sort of know she’d be good at being a therapy dog. She’s a very calm, nice nature, and she just loves people, and loves being stroked and cuddled and attention.” Just like with the kids, Camilla appeared thoroughly entertained by the affectionate greeting and laughed warmly during the encounter.
As the visit continued, the Queen learned more about the school community. The Fane Street Primary School represents 45 countries and 47 languages among its 285 pupils. The visit itself followed the students' letters inviting her to the school. It was something Camilla even acknowledged during a speech. “It’s a pleasure to be here and having received a letter from two of your pupils asking me to come here, I’m here, so I’m very grateful,” she said. She then continued, “I’ve had a very small tour of all that you are doing here, but I can see you are doing a fantastic job with so many different nationalities.” Camilla later unveiled a commemorative plaque, presented children’s books to principal Hilary Cunningham, and exchanged several high-fives with cheering students before leaving.
Afterward, the outlet says, Cunningham described the royal visit as “absolutely amazing” and said the children would remember the day for years to come. She said, “The children were just delighted, they were really, really happy.” Cunningham added, “We actually had one child in tears, because she was so happy.” In the end, it was not just the Queen’s visit that resonated so strongly, but the way she responded to the children’s awe with patience, kindness, and a bit of humor.
