5 Signs Prince Harry’s UK Return May Have Made His Rift With King Charles Worse
Royal Rift Deepens
Prince Harry’s grand homecoming to the UK had many convinced that the rift with King Charles might finally begin to diminish. But with how things have unfolded so far, it seems the distance between the father and son has only grown. From the ongoing security dispute to another missed chance for Charles to see his grandchildren, the visit has faced more setbacks than signs of reconciliation. Here are five instances that suggest the relationship may now be on even shakier ground.
Olive Branch Snubbed
Ahead of Prince Harry's UK visit, King Charles reportedly offered an olive branch to the Sussexes by offering a place to stay at a royal residence. But the offer was not immediately accepted, as Harry was focused on sorting out security after RAVEC turned down his request for taxpayer-funded police protection. A spokesperson for Harry later said he accepted the accommodation offer as soon as it became practical, after first trying to arrange alternative security. By then, the offer had already turned into another point of disagreement between the Palace and Harry's team.
Palace Fully Booked
After initially holding off, Harry eventually accepted Charles' offer to stay at a royal residence during his UK trip. But by then, Buckingham Palace reportedly told him the accommodation was no longer available, saying the acceptance had come too late and that logistical arrangements had already been made. The Duke’s spokesperson questioned the Palace's claim that the offer was withdrawn because of the expected judgment in Harry's legal case against Associated Newspapers, saying the Palace already knew the ruling was approaching. Royal editor Russell Myers told Today, “I think there are around 240 bedrooms in Buckingham Palace. Around 50 are kept for guests of the King at any one time, and they still can’t find a place for him.”
Six Threats, Same Decision
Security was once again at the centre of Harry's UK visit. During his legal battle over police protection, his lawyers said he had faced six credible terror threats since stepping back from royal duties, including an alleged threat from Al-Qaeda. Even so, he was not granted automatic police protection, and Charles did not intervene as security decisions are made by RAVEC. It became yet another issue driving a wedge between Harry and his father.
No Family Reunion
Harry ultimately travelled to the UK alone after Meghan Markle, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet over ongoing security concerns. Their absence also meant Charles missed another chance to see his grandchildren, whom he reportedly has not met since 2022. What was expected to be a rare family reunion never happened and became yet another reason for the growing distance between father and son.
Harry Puts ‘Second Family’ First
Prince Harry's UK visit was always meant to be about the 2027 Invictus Games, with events in London and Birmingham marking the one-year countdown. But much of the attention ended up on whether he would reunite with King Charles instead. As those hopes faded, Harry returned his focus to Invictus, calling the community his "second family." No matter the headlines surrounding the Royals, the Games remain at the heart of his work.
