4 Things Princess Charlotte Won't Be Allowed to Do That George and Louis Can

Princess Charlotte's birth led to changes to some age-old royal rules, giving her the same place in the line of succession as her brothers. But even with those changes, Charlotte could still face some restrictions that George and Louis won’t. Some of the monarchy’s older traditions continue to treat male and female royals differently. Let's take a look.

Charlotte may have a prominent place in the Royal Family, but she does not have the same route to royal titles that her brothers do. When Prince William becomes king, George will automatically become Duke of Cornwall as the monarch’s eldest son and heir. Louis could also be given a dukedom by the monarch later on. But Charlotte would not automatically become a duchess simply because she is the daughter of the monarch. She would have to marry a duke to hold the title rather than being granted to her in her own right.

Charlotte’s access to some of the Royal Family’s most famous heirlooms could depend partly on the role she takes on as she gets older. Queen Elizabeth famously wore a tiara for the first time on her wedding day. However, Princess Anne and Princess Margaret wore them before marriage, but they were working royals at the time (via PEOPLE). Charlotte could have access to wearing a tiara before her marriage if she becomes a working member. Meanwhile, her brothers will be able to wear certain heirlooms, such as military uniforms, without needing to be working royals.

Marriage works differently for royal men and women when it comes to titles. A Prince’s wife would normally take on the corresponding female title, while the husband of a princess does not automatically receive one. Princess Anne’s marriage to Mark Phillips, for instance. Queen Elizabeth offered Phillips an earldom, but he declined it. Charlotte’s future husband would face the same situation, as any title he received would have to be granted separately.

Charlotte’s children would step into the Royal Family with a very different starting point from George and Louis’ future children. Under the current rules, royal titles such as Prince and Princess are generally passed down through the male line, which means that her kids would not automatically receive them through her. Anne’s children, Peter Phillips and Zara Tindall, for instance, were not given a royal title at birth.
