Queen Camilla’s position inside the royal family has changed considerably in recent years. Once viewed largely through the lens of her complicated relationship with King Charles, she has gradually carved out a role of her own. From standing beside the King through one of the most difficult periods of his reign to navigating sensitive family dynamics and drawing on her own experiences to champion important causes, Camilla has increasingly emerged as a powerful figure in her own right.

Through Thick and Thin

In August 2026, during a conversation with Dame Laura Lee, CEO of Maggie's, Camilla offered an unusually personal insight into what it was like to support the King after his cancer diagnosis. She admitted, “Nobody could say anything at the time. That was quite difficult.” She also revealed that she was “longing to let it out” but “obviously I couldn’t.” This vulnerable admission cemented her role as the King's primary emotional pillar and confidante during a period of immense constitutional uncertainty.

Safeguarding the King's Interests

When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle returned to the UK in August, Charles found support in Camilla, who was right by his side. Harry and Charles' meeting was private, reportedly with even Prince William and Princess Kate unaware of it. Camilla was the only royal, apart from the King himself, present for the reunion. A source told Vanity Fair, “Charles wanted Camilla to be there for moral support and because she has been a pillar of strength for him throughout all the drama with Harry, and she dropped everything." Camilla reportedly 'dropped everything' for the private meeting at Highgrove. She is increasingly seen as part of the small circle surrounding the monarch when sensitive family matters arise, supporting him also during the Andrew saga.

Camilla’s April 2026 US state visit also demonstrated how much influence she can wield without having any formal political power. She accompanied Charles on the four-day visit, which came at a delicate point in UK-US relations. The trip was intended to strengthen the relationship between the two countries, which had grown strained at the time, and the government was looking to the monarchy for help. Former US ambassador to Britain Matthew Barzun described the visit as a “really big success” and said that what was sometimes called soft power was visible through the growth of “trust, respect and understanding.” During the visit, Camilla also promoted her literacy initiative, The Queen's Reading Room, delivering a direct message to American audiences to "keep reading."

Camilla Opens Up

Queen Camilla has been very vocal in her fight against domestic and sexual violence, and in this endeavor conducts regular public meetings, with the most recent being on March 10, 2026, at St. James's Palace on the occasion of International Women's Day. Therein, the Queen spoke about the message of solidarity and added, "We stand with you, alongside you, today and every day, in solidarity, sorrow and sympathy" for survivors of all types of violence. Camilla’s work against domestic violence is personal given her own experience as a teenager. During a BBC Radio 4 interview broadcast last year, she revealed that a man attacked her on a train. Detailing the incident, she shared, “Somebody I didn’t know … I was reading my book, and you know, this boy, man, attacked me, and I did fight back." The Queen added that she was "furious about it, and it’s sort of lurked for many years," which is why this is one topic she strongly feels about. By choosing to open up about the same, the Queen changed the way royals champion causes; a notable evolution in royal advocacy. This openness has helped shape her public identity as one that extends beyond her role as the King's wife.
