It's A Girl!

Princess Eugenie dropped some good news on the 4th of August. She announced the birth of her third child, a baby girl, on Instagram with the caption: "Jack and I are so excited to announce Baby Girl Brooksbank!! We are beyond in love with our girlie," followed by five red heart emojis. She is now 15th in the line of succession to the throne. The royal couple has yet to announce the baby's name.

Line of Succession

Prince William is the current heir to the throne, and Prince George is next in line. William's other two children, Charlotte and Louis, are positioned second and third, respectively. Following them are Prince Harry and his children, with Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor's family next. When King Charles III's reign ends, the line will shift, elevating Prince Harry and others, including the York family. Following which, Eugenie's daughter will be 15th in the line of succession to the British throne.

A Working Royal?

The new royal baby may not be an HRH and won't hold a working position within the royal family. The baby is the fifth grandchild of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, the former Duke of York, who lost his royal titles due to his association with Jeffrey Epstein. Although his daughters, Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice, retained their titles, neither is a working royal. Eugenie currently heads an art gallery in Mayfair, while her husband is involved in hospitality and marketing.

Her Royal Connections

King Charles III is Princess Eugenie's uncle, as he is the elder brother of her father, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. Thus, making him a great-uncle to Eugenie's children: August, Ernest, and her baby girl. Princess Eugenie's first cousins are Prince William and Prince Harry. Prince William, being Eugenie's first cousin, is a first cousin once removed to her children, and when he becomes monarch, they will have a first cousin once removed on the throne.

No HRH Title

Unlike the children of the monarch or the children of the Prince of Wales, Eugenie's newborn daughter will not automatically receive the title of Princess or the style of Her Royal Highness (HRH). Under the letters patent issued by King George V in 1917, great-grandchildren of the sovereign are generally not entitled to royal titles. As the daughter of Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank, she will instead grow up without an HRH designation, following the same convention as her older brothers, August and Ernest Brooksbank. While she remains a member of the royal family and is in the line of succession, she is expected to lead a largely private life without a formal royal title.

A Child of Two Monarchs

King Charles was particularly thrilled when he first heard the news of Princess Eugenie's third pregnancy. Eugenie's newborn daughter belongs to a new generation of royals whose lives are expected to span two reigns. Born during the reign of Charles, she will likely spend her childhood under his monarchy before coming of age after William eventually ascends the throne. That would make her one of the first royal children born during Charles's reign to grow into adulthood under King William, offering her a unique place in the monarchy's transition from one generation to the next.
