Tom Cruise Left a Senior Royal 'Heartbroken' After He Moved Away From London: Report

The actor has lived for more than four years in the capital, basing himself in the upscale enclave from around 2021 until his sudden exit in January 2026.

Tom Cruise has slipped quietly out of London, but his departure appears to have left more behind than an empty Knightsbridge penthouse. The actor has lived for more than four years in the capital, basing himself in the upscale enclave from around 2021 until his sudden exit in January 2026. During that period, the UK became his primary home as he filmed Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One and Part Two and worked on other projects, often speaking warmly about his affection for the country.

Now, however, a new report suggests Cruise’s abrupt return to the US has unsettled at least one senior royal, who is said to be reeling from the news. Given the actor’s well-established ties to the royal circle during his extended British stay, the reaction is perhaps less surprising than it first appears. It is none other than Kate Middleton who is reportedly 'devastated' by Cruise’s abrupt move back to the States. Royal commentator Neil Sean has claimed she was left 'heartbroken' by the news, particularly given how firmly the actor had embedded himself in London life over the past few years.

Cruise, who had been attending high-profile events in the UK, was widely seen as a familiar — and welcome — presence on the royal scene. Cruise’s connection with the royal family is well established. He attended Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2022 and was granted a private tour of Windsor Castle. His royal links stretch back decades, where he met Princess Diana in 1992 and Prince Philip in 2017, and more recently shared a moment with Prince William and Middleton at the London Air Ambulance Charity Gala dinner.

Confirming the depth of that relationship, Neil Sean described Cruise as a “very good friend” of the royals in his YouTube channel, Daily News Headlines. He even recounted a light-hearted anecdote from a film premiere to point out the warmth between Cruise and Middleton. That same premiere sparked headlines of its own after Cruise appeared to break protocol by offering Middletn his hand as she navigated a staircase. While the moment raised eyebrows, Sean dismissed any suggestion of impropriety, insisting it was simply Cruise acting out of courtesy. According to the expert, the gesture was an act of chivalry.

Behind the scenes, however, Cruise’s decision to leave London seems to have been driven by more serious concerns. Reports suggest his departure caught members of his staff off guard, with safety worries cited as a key factor. Rumors had been swirling that the actor was uneasy about living in the capital, particularly amid complaints from residents in East Grinstead and growing anxiety about crime. Mirroring those claims, Sean said in his vlog that the 63-year-old was leaving London due to safety concerns, pointing to the city’s high crime rate as a decisive influence.

Those speculations were later given firmer footing. The Daily Record confirmed that Cruise has vacated his luxury penthouse at One Hyde Park in Knightsbridge and returned to the US. The move reportedly followed an armed gang raid on a Bucherer jewelry store located directly beneath his building, an incident that crystallized his concerns.
