The Surprising Reason Princess Kate Broke Her Own Style Rule at Latest Cancer Research Event

Kate chose an American bespoke design Rodarte over traditional British brands, embodying a blend of royal elegance and modern pop culture.

Kate Middleton stepped out in a bold, head-to-toe red Rodarte look for last night's Cancer Research UK reception, a departure from her typically understated style. The choice felt loaded with meaning: with King Charles still undergoing treatment, this was a cause close to both their hearts, and Middleton made sure to dress like it. Opting for an American bespoke designer over a British label, she set aside the usual royal conventions in favor of something more personal.

Her dress, with an estimated cost of $1,923, has a vintage vibe and aligns with her longstanding penchant for retro, ladylike fashions, which she frequently sources from the British company Alessandra Rich, The Telegraph reported. The Princess of Wales has defied norms and retained the original design, complete with a red floral brooch. She paired her bold color outfit with Gianvito Rossi stilettos, a Miu Miu purse, and a G Collins & Sons ruby necklace and earrings. Additionally, in keeping with Royal Ascot's official color for the year, Middleton's tiny heart-filled dress represents a vivid embrace of the 'tomato woman' trend for summer. Daniel Fletcher, creative director at Ascot, has observed that this vivid orangey-red evokes a joyous celebration of life, akin to a bright summer day.

The tiny hearts could symbolically mean the "outpouring" of love she received during her healing journey. With the same compassion for those facing the hardest battles in life, the Princess of Wales wanted to show that she is silently supporting them. In early 2024, the Princess of Wales and King Charles III were diagnosed with cancer. The future queen completed her treatment by September and announced her remission in January 2025. Meanwhile, the monarch is still undergoing treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer, which is being managed and is set to be reduced in 2026, as he indicated late last year.

According to Vanity Fair, a royal source claimed that King Charles and Kate's bond has grown stronger, given their shared health experiences. A family acquaintance stated that, while they have always had a father-daughter relationship, these circumstances have strengthened their understanding, with Charles expressing awe and appreciation for Kate's bravery. "Charles adores Kate and has so much respect for her and the courage she has shown in all of this," the source stated.
