Royal Biographer Claims Sarah Ferguson Now Sees Andrew as 'Toxic' — and Is Making Moves to Protect Herself
Sarah Ferguson and Andrew were last photographed together when they attended the funeral of the Duchess of Kent.
Sarah Ferguson has been elusive ever since her links with Jeffrey Epstein made headlines. But before that, she was standing as one of the strongest supporters of former Prince Andrew, despite being legally separated from him in 1996. They even decided to live together for years, and co-parented their daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie. Even while attending major royal family events, the former couple regularly appeared united and spoke warmly about each other. However, their bond has now become quite turbulent, with reports claiming that Ferguson may be secretly trying to redefine her public image by distancing herself from Andrew’s increasingly controversial reputation.
Popular royal biographer Andrew Lownie, whose book titled "The Rise and Fall of the House of York" explores the turbulent journey of Andrew and Ferguson, has now shared his thoughts on what the former Duchess of York may be thinking at the moment. As reported by HELLO Magazine, he stated, "They were kind of joined together, them against the world, and that's now clearly fractured. I think she [Sarah] feels that he's toxic and that he’s going to destroy her branding opportunities, so it’s time to go off on her own."
Offering a similar perspective, another royal commentator, Ingrid Seward, has weighed in on the duo's relationship dynamic, suggesting that the respect that Ferguson may have once held for her former husband appears to have faded over time. She said, "He embarrassed her with the way he spoke to people, and I think she lost respect for him. She is very charming and would never speak down to someone she considered her inferior, but Andrew did, and she hated that. He was very unsophisticated."
The pair was last photographed together when they attended the funeral of Katharine, Duchess of Kent, which was held at Westminster Cathedral on September 16, 2025. But some reports suggest that they also attended the christening of their granddaughter Athena, Beatrice’s youngest daughter, together, which took place at St James’s Palace on December 12, 2025. The past several months have been very difficult for both Ferguson and Andrew, particularly as their past connections and links to convicted s*x offender Jeffrey Epstein resurfaced in media discussions.
Currently, the disgraced prince is going through a detailed police investigation following allegations related to misconduct in public office. As reported by the BBC, it is also being suggested that detectives may examine claims of alleged sexual misconduct as part of the wider inquiry. He was arrested on February 19 and later released during the investigation. Despite the constant scrutiny, Andrew has repeatedly denied all allegations of wrongdoing and even clarified that he did not personally benefit from his position as the UK’s trade envoy between 2001 and 2011.
