The Times has reported that William is not planning to make a film about Diana to mark the anniversary of her death next year, and the decision was made to avoid further conflict with his brother. The Prince is understood to have declined several offers to take part in documentary tributes about his mother.
William, who remains estranged from Harry, reportedly wants to avoid any situation where the two are “pitted against each other.” For the unversed, earlier PEOPLE reported that Harry is considering several projects to mark his mother’s 30th death anniversary. One of the ideas being discussed is a possible documentary about Diana, although it has not been finalized or officially confirmed.
People close to William say the upcoming anniversary will be “a difficult situation for him,” as he remains “really emotional” over his mother’s death. As per sources, he already had his “final catharsis” through the tributes he gave for Diana’s 20th anniversary. William and Harry had spoken extensively about their mother in 2017, when they came together for two documentaries made for the BBC and ITV to mark the 20th anniversary of her death.
According to Hello!, during a screening of Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy at Kensington Palace, William told the guests, “We won’t speak as openly about her again.” He continued, “There aren’t many days that go by that I don’t think of her … My mother lives with me every day.” Meanwhile, Harry spoke about the lasting grief surrounding his mother’s death, recalling how Diana “smothered us with love,” admitting that “there’s a lot of grief that still needs to be let out.”
Earl Spencer’s memoir has reportedly made things even more difficult for William. He is said to have had little warning about his uncle’s book, which has been highly critical of the King and other members of the royal family, and found the fallout “difficult.”
