Melania Trump Joked About King Charles' Sweet Tooth And No One Saw That Coming
King Charles and Melania Trump showcase their close bond during a lighthearted tour of the White House beehives.
King Charles and Queen Camilla's state visit to the US comes at a critical time for US-UK relations. While the King resisted Trump's power move that involved a handshake and a hug with ease, there were some light-hearted moments as well. The royal couple kicked off their four-day US state tour on April 27, and while media outlets are closely watching their every move, an unfiltered moment between the King and First Lady Melania Trump surprised many. It was a conversation about a humble jar of honey that broke the ice, revealing a rapport between the monarch and First Lady.
President Trump and Melania, in their efforts to be the perfect hosts, led the King and the Queen to the White House beehives, an area that serves as the cornerstone of the South Lawn’s local produce program. As the group gathered, Melania, dressed in her buttercream yellow Adam Lippes skirt suit, was captured giggling and grinning broadly during an exchange with Charles. The levity peaked when White House assistant pastry chef Carlo Figarella explained the tradition of gifting the hive’s bounty to visiting dignitaries. “And everybody that goes home tomorrow, goes home tomorrow with one of these little jars of honey in honor of you guys’ visit,” Figarella told the visiting royals. Even so, the First Lady was quick to make a sarcastic comment that didn’t go unnoticed.
Knowing the King’s reputation as an organic produce connoisseur, Melania couldn’t resist mentioning his famous sweet tooth in jest. Leaning in and briefly placing a hand on the King’s arm, she quipped to the staff, “We’ll put in extra for Their Majesties, yes? Because they are lovers of honey.” Beaming in response to the gesture, the king appeared charmed as the First Lady ensured that his sweet tooth would be well-catered to back at Buckingham Palace. This easy chemistry between the two isn’t a recent development.
The King and Melania have maintained a long-standing connection as pen pals. Revealing the same in her 2024 self-titled memoir, she traced their correspondence back to Trump’s first state visit to the UK in 2019. “I was seated next to Prince Charles, and it was an absolute pleasure to reconnect with him,” she wrote, adding, “Our paths had crossed many years ago in New York City.” Describing their shared interests in history and conservation, she stated, “This time we engaged in an interesting conversation about his deep-rooted commitment to environmental conservation.”
The honey jar tidbit provided a soft contrast to the sharper edges of the current political climate. Just a couple of weeks ago, President Trump had lambasted UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer over Britain’s stance on the war with Iran. Taking the matter to Truth Social, Trump first described the UK as “our once Greatest Ally” but later told reporters that Starmer “is no Winston Churchill.” Amid such turbulent times, Charles’ state visit becomes even more crucial to mend the bond between the two nations.
