Meghan Might Not Have Wanted to Return to the UK With Harry — And It Could Come Down to This One Reason
While the Sussexes are returning to the UK, it may not have been an enthusiastic decision from both Meghan Markle and Prince Harry.
If anyone knows how to drop bombshell news, it’s Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. On Thursday, it was disclosed that the couple, along with their kids, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, would return to the UK for an extended period of time. There are speculations as to what must have led to this sensational decision, given their history with the country. However, one royal expert believes that it was the Duke of Sussex who wanted to come back to the UK, not his wife.
Six years ago, when the Sussexes left the UK, Markle seemingly found her footing quite easily. She had, of course, returned to her old stomping grounds. The former Suits star made her way back to the screen and even kickstarted her entrepreneurial journey with her lifestyle brand, As Ever. However, the same might not apply to Harry. That’s why royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams said via the Daily Mail, “I don't believe Meghan wanted to come back, but Harry did. He had no role; it was quite literally doing pathetic cameo performances in Meghan's shows.”
It was also reported earlier that the Sussexes were going through a financial crisis. Their multi-million dollar deals with Netflix and Spotify had fallen through, As Ever was not as successful as it initially let on, and the couple had reportedly run out of the Duke’s inheritance money. “They have failed in the United States. Meghan's career hasn't taken off at all,” Fitzwilliams added.
There is no doubt that Markle and Harry’s return to the UK would create ripples through the Palace walls. Fitzwilliams believes that the comeback could provoke a “crisis for the monarchy” as the Firm’s responses to unexpected news are often "poor." But when it comes to public response, the royal expert claims it is difficult to judge whether the public would accept or reject the Sussexes. “The facts are that they have a brand that everyone knows who they are. When they do and say things, they get publicity, and from that point of view, you never know what happens when they're actually here. And they're going to be here a lot,” he added.
The Sussexes’ return might also make things difficult for Prince William and Kate Middleton. The two camps have been estranged for the past several years, and the comeback of the prodigal couple might create hurdles for the Prince and Princess of Wales’ ideas for the monarchy, as the royal expert mentioned, “What will happen? It won't make life easy for William and Catherine and their family, and how they were hoping the monarchy would progress.”
With the UK school term starting early next month, Markle and Harry might make the shift very soon. While rumors continue to circulate, concrete details about their accommodations and schools are still under wraps.
