Meghan Markle Was Often Compared to Princess Diana — and They Had One Thing in Common
Meghan Markle has often drawn parallels with Princess Diana and while they may not be as alike, they do share one commonality.
Meghan Markle has always drawn comparisons to her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana. Even recently, when the Duchess of Sussex posted a birthday snapshot of herself jumping in the swimming pool or wearing Diana’s butterfly earrings to a gala, the talk had mainly been about the People’s Princess. Whether Markle was offering a tribute or copying Diana depended on which side of the fan war one listened to.
Recently, royal author Simon Vigar gave his two cents on whether the Duchess of Sussex was similar to the late Princess of Wales. During an episode of ITV News Talking Royals, host Charlene White asked Vigar the same question. “I don't think they're similar people,” Vigar replied, before adding that he believed Markle and Diana, along with Queen Camilla and Kate Middleton, were “strong women”.
Coming back to the duo in question, the royal author held firm to his opinion before noting that, although they weren’t similar, Markle and Diana shared one thing in common. “The similarity I would say is that both of them felt that they were left to fend for themselves, and obviously the loneliness was profound for both of them. We know how bad Megan said it got and Diana as well,” Vigar said, before adding, “But to answer your question, I mean, Megan was only a working royal for 18 months. It was fleeting. “
While Vigar might not think Markle and Diana are similar, Prince Harry certainly believes so. During their Netflix docu-series, Harry & Meghan, the Duke of Sussex said, “So much of what Meghan is, and how she is, is so similar to my mum. She has the same compassion; she has the same empathy; she has the same confidence. She has this warmth about her.” Even during their engagement interview in 2017, Harry had claimed that if his mother were alive, she and his future wife would be “thick as thieves”.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex often discussed Diana whenever they talked about their decision to leave the Firm. As Vigar confirmed, Harry has “regularly” cited that he tried to stop “history repeating itself” when it came to his wife, and that this had been the motivation behind his seismic move. “In fact, that was the trigger for leaving the UK: the death threats, the security, and they thought they could have a hybrid role that will be the change that the Sussexes make. Can royal children have a hybrid role? You know, sometimes supporting their cousins back in the UK, sometimes not. Will they use their titles? We don't know that,” the royal author mentioned before saying that despite it all, the Sussexes’ children have the titles of Prince and Princess at the end of the day.
Vigar further added that if Diana were “alive”, Prince William and Harry would have never fallen apart. “She would have banged their heads together,” he said. However, today, the two brothers are sadly not on speaking terms.
