Meghan Markle and Prince Harry traded the royal spotlight for a quieter life in California. While the Sussexes’ pockets aren’t running dry, thanks to their many independent ventures, Markle enjoys embracing her role as a 'modern-day homemaker', tending gardens and preparing meals for her family. A recent video on her Instagram shows the Duchess whipping up food and drinks for her guests, with a little help from her daughter, Princess Lilibet. The pointed clip 'humbly serves' a message to the royal family — she’s living her most authentic life, far from the suffocating traditions and customs of royal life.

Markle captioned the video, "A little behind the scenes of @aseverofficial. Hope you enjoy your treats when they arrive this week! 🍯" The clip featured her happily cooking, plucking fruits, tending the garden with Lilibet, and preparing a delicious treat in the kitchen for her guests using the foraged ingredients. As reported by Marca, her 'modern housewife' aesthetic is a stark contrast to her former life at Buckingham Palace, where Michelin star chefs and staff were just a call away. Through the video, Markle seems to signal to the royal family and the world that her true self lies in groundedness, simplicity, and, ultimately, independence.

The Duchess may have kept her royal title, but she finds joy in the simple. Her Instagram also shows her children following in her footsteps, helping with farming and gardening, subtly showing that they are content without the luxury and grandeur of royal life. In her June 17 interview on the Aspire with Emma Grede podcast, Markle revealed that she and Harry have a unique 'weekend job' for their kids to help them stay grounded. As per InStyle, she dished, "We grow a lot of veggies. We sometimes do a little farmer’s market stand... There’s a cost and a price for things, and I think that’s key for children to understand, especially children who are very lucky to have a home that has privilege."

The same interview also saw Markle speak about the importance of living an 'authentic life' free from royal restrictions. Speaking about her viral Baby Mama Dance, she took a swipe at the royals and said, "That was four years ago, so it's also a really great reminder that with all the noise or whatever people do, there's still a whole life – a real, authentic, fun life." Elsewhere in the interview, she also explained, "You have to be so authentically the role model and the example of confidence, self-forgiveness, kindness, fun — all of those things, and you can’t fake that."

The Sussexes have been vocal about their commitment to raising their children away from the public eye. Harry reportedly has left the door open for Archie and Lilibet to choose for themselves if they want to have a royal role when they’re older. Meanwhile, Markle finds joy in their helping hands as she gracefully balances her roles as a devoted homemaker and a strong businesswoman.
