King Charles Reveals His Favorite Comfort Food Amid Cancer Treatment — and It’s Named After Andrew
The reveal came in the documentary Finding Harmony—A King's Vision, which explores Charles's passion for sustainability.
As palace chefs consistently prepare meals fit for a king, it’s common to assume King Charles enjoys only elaborate dishes. However, the monarch recently spilled the beans about how one of his favorite comfort foods is surprisingly quite simple: a baked potato. The reveal came in the documentary Finding Harmony—A King's Vision, which explores Charles's passion for sustainability, traditional farming, and locally sourced produce. Yet what made the reveal particularly intriguing was that the specific potato variety he prefers shares a name closely associated with his younger brother, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.
Discussing his ultimate comfort food in a documentary, King Charles shared his secret to the perfect baked potato. "If you want to have a decent baked potato, which I love, you've got to have the crispy skins," the King explained. "So the red Duke of Yorks are very good, we've discovered, again through trial and error." While the Duke of York potato variety has been a British favorite for its texture and flavor since 1942, the name carries an undeniable irony. King Charles remains locked in a notoriously strained relationship with his younger brother, who previously held the Duke of York title. Andrew, who continues to face intense public scrutiny over his past ties to Jeffrey Epstein, was stripped of his official royal duties, titles, and military patronages because of the controversies surrounding him.
The timing of the matter has also led to additional attention. After all, Charles and Mountbatten-Windsor are assumed to have grown increasingly distant, especially in recent years. Many reports came to light revealing that the King did not visit his younger brother during trips to Sandringham earlier this year. Against that narrative, the monarch's love for the potato variety appears to have nothing to do with royal titles and everything to do with achieving the perfect baked potato. While Charles may know exactly how he likes them prepared, it seems he is not the one doing the cooking.
But Queen Camilla is also not responsible for that responsibility. During a 2022 You magazine interview, reported by Woman and Home, with her son, food writer Tom Parker Bowles, the Queen candidly admitted that baked potatoes are not her culinary specialty. She got extremely candid in the interview and even looked back at her kitchen mishaps. She joked and said, "I'm not a natural baker, to say the least. As for baked potatoes… Many a poor, incinerated specimen has been found in the bottom of the Aga, put in, then forgotten about." Her confession gave royal viewers a rare glimpse into the less polished side of royal life and revealed that even queens occasionally struggle with simple recipes.
The royal family's fondness for baked potatoes extends beyond Charles and Camilla. Previously, even Sarah Ferguson revealed that the dish was a regular meal in the York household she once shared with her ex-husband. During an interview with Access Hollywood, Ferguson disclosed her preferred toppings when asked whether she opts for bacon, sour cream, or butter. She responded with, "Mayonnaise, butter, cheese, and really crispy skin." But it turns out, for Charles, his favorite comfort food may be doing more than satisfying cravings; it could also be helping boost his well-being as he continues his cancer treatment journey.
