King Charles is known to have been eager to see his grandchildren, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, along with his son, Prince Harry. But given the many bombshells Harry and Meghan Markle made about the royal family since their exit in 2022, Charles allegedly had a condition for his reconciliation with Harry and his family. According to Page Six, Charles made sure he had a witness present in the room throughout the meeting at his country estate, Highgrove House. This is exactly why Queen Camilla reportedly dropped everything to be present right by his side for the occasion.

The expert royal writer Robert Jobson told the outlet that, “The Queen was there for a reason. To make sure that everything was witnessed.” She clearly acted as her husband’s ‘insurance policy’. This comes as no surprise given Harry and Markle caused quite a lot of damage to the Firm with spilled secrets and allegations in their infamous 2021 Oprah Winfrey interview, 2022 Netflix docu-series, Harry & Meghan, and, of course, Harry’s 2023 memoir, Spare. Jobson explained that, keeping the past in mind, the King took precautions so that details of the reunion meeting will never be revealed. He argued that no one apart from those present will ever know what really went down at Highgrove.

The cautionary steps by Charles reportedly followed those of the late Queen Elizabeth, who reportedly refused to even take calls from Harry without senior aides being present in the room. She also banned any photography at their meetings, including the very last one before she passed away, even as the Sussexes allegedly wished to take pictures of her first moments meeting Lilibet, her namesake great-granddaughter.

Jobson explained that Charles ultimately agreed to the meeting with his son and daughter-in-law so that he would have no regrets in the future. He said, “He’s living with cancer; he’s had a lot of meetings lately with people.” Whether the reported precautions were simply a matter of protocol or a reflection of lingering mistrust, they underscore just how complicated the relationship between Charles and Harry remains. While the reunion itself has sparked hopes of reconciliation after years of public fallout, it also serves as a reminder that rebuilding trust is rarely a quick process. The Sussexes’ future relationship with the royal family remains uncertain; only time will tell whether this long-awaited reunion marks the beginning of a lasting reconciliation or a temporary truce for the King’s sake.
