There were several conflicting accounts about when, and even whether, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor will leave Royal Lodge, his mansion he has lived in since three decades. Some suggested a slow transition near easter, while others hinted at his resistance. What ultimately unfolded, however, was abrupt– and catalysed by fresh revelations that appear to have collapsed any remaining room for delay.

According to a new report, the latest release of Epstein-related files on January 30 triggered an “urgent discussion” between King Charles and Prince William just days later. By February 2, the man now known as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor had left his 30-room home in Windsor under the cover of darkness, well ahead of the timeline originally set for his move to the Sandringham estate.

Speaking to The Daily Mail, a source said Mountbatten-Windsor was “dispatched by car to the depths of Norfolk” in a move that was “hastily arranged and done under the radar, leaving Royal Lodge staff to pack up what remains of Andrew’s belongings.” Mountbatten-Windsor had lived at Royal Lodge since 2003, with his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson joining him there in 2008.

For now, Mountbatten-Windsor is staying at Wood Farm, a modest property once favoured by his late father, Prince Philip, while renovations are completed on nearby Marsh Farm, which is intended to become his permanent home. The decision to move swiftly, sources suggest, was driven not only by the fresh Epstein material but also by Mountbatten-Windsor’s public conduct in its aftermath.

The King and the Prince of Wales were said to be incensed after photographs emerged showing Mountbatten-Windsor riding on horseback at Windsor Castle, and waving at members of the public as he drove away. “Waving at the public harked back to his royal days when he was used to adulation and respect,” a source told The Daily Mail, adding that, “Andrew is having difficulty acknowledging reality, and it was increasingly causing concern at the Palace—both as a sign of his mental state and because it wouldn’t play well with the public witnessing him still enjoying the trappings of royalty.”

Faced with renewed scrutiny, Charles is said to have concluded that containment, rather than gradual transition, which was the only viable option. The Times reported that the King chose to immediately “remove him from the public gaze” by “accelerating” the move to Sandringham.“The King feels he has no other option than to provide for his brother, who will be privately funded on a private estate,” a palace source told the outlet. “Every time he’s tried to support himself by independent means, it has led to greater trouble. Containing him is the hope.”

Another insider described the latest Epstein revelations as “shocking and distressing” for the King, who had already stripped the former prince of his remaining royal titles and privileges in October. Even so, the renewed disclosures appear to have reinforced a sense that time was no longer a luxury.

That urgency was underscored publicly on February 5, when Charles was heckled about Mountbatten-Windsor during an engagement in Essex. A friend of the King’s later told The Times, “The King is acutely aware of the public feeling. He doesn’t need to be heckled to understand the mood of the nation. Accelerating him out of Royal Lodge was another nod to show he gets it. A plan made is not the same as a plan enacted, and the King wanted that plan enacted ASAP.”
