Kate’s Sweet Nod to Queen Elizabeth With Her Jewelry Might Just Have Been a Sly Dig at Meghan

Kate Middleton looked like a breath of fresh air as she joined King Charles, Queen Camilla, and Prince William to welcome French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte, for their state visit. The Princess of Wales opted for a pale pink jacket by Christian Dior and paired it with a matching skirt and hat. However, the talking point of her look was her jewelry, which she inherited from the late Queen Elizabeth and her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana. While royal watchers lauded her for the sweet nod, some eagle-eyed fans were convinced it was a dig at her estranged sister-in-law, Meghan Markle.

Middleton wore a three-layer pearl necklace that belonged to the late monarch and a pair of matching earrings she inherited from Diana’s collection. According to The List, the Princess of Wales may have taken a swipe at Markle by flaunting just how much she inherited, which goes to show she was much more favored. This supposed dig comes amid new reports of tension between Markle and her grandmother-in-law.
Middleton, on the other hand, was known to be one of the late Queen’s favorite family members, inheriting a large portion of the monarch’s jewelry after her death in 2022. Additionally, she is believed to be the only person to whom the former monarch regularly lent her treasured and expensive jewelry. William also proposed to Middleton with Diana’s iconic sapphire engagement ring.

While it is unclear if Markle’s name was added to the late Queen’s will for the distribution of her jewelry, she did receive some pieces from her collection as gifts. The Duchess of Sussex was gifted a pair of simple pearl and diamond stud earrings by the late Queen during their only solo royal engagement in 2018. Markle wore the earrings during the Queen’s funeral in 2022 to pay tribute. Besides the earrings, Markle also received a significant part of Diana’s jewelry, as the Princess had wished for them to be passed down to the wives of her two sons. Diana’s ‘letter of wishes’ read, “I would like you to allocate all my jewelry to the share to be held by my sons, so that their wives may, in due course, have it or use it. I leave the exact division of the jewelry to your discretion,” according to Town & Country magazine.

The selection of jewelry that came in Markle’s share included several gold and diamond bracelets, earrings, an iconic aquamarine cocktail ring, a Cartier tank watch, and a diamond cross necklace. Prince Harry also added two diamonds from Diana’s collection to the ring with which he proposed to the Suits alum. The mother-of-two has often been spotted wearing these heirlooms from her mother-in-law to various high-profile events.
