Kate’s Surprise Umbrella Move in Belfast Was Pure Sweetness — but It Was William Who Stole the Moment
Kate Middleton displayed a sweet gesture towards attendees during her recent Belfast visit.
Kate Middleton and Prince William, who have been out and about in recent months, traveled to Belfast last week for a surprise visit. Unfortunately, it was not only the excited fans who welcomed the royal couple to Northern Ireland, but it was also the rain. The weather could have easily created an awkward situation. However, the Princess of Wales’ quick thinking helped shield attendees from the rainfall before her husband ushered everyone indoors.
Middleton and William were greeted by Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly, Belfast mayor Róis-Máire Donnelly and South Belfast MP Claire Hanna in Belfast under a strict security blackout. It was then that the sky decided to pour down on the city, prompting Little-Pengelly to joke that the weather “wasn’t playing ball”. The rain could have posed challenges, especially for the ladies dressed in beautiful formal outfits for the royal visit. And who would understand the situation better than the Princess of Wales?
The beloved royal, who had been holding an umbrella, immediately stepped forward to cover Little-Pengelly. “I'll share my umbrella with you,” she said via Hello! With the sweet gesture, Middleton once again did what she always does best. Win hearts wherever she goes.
While the princess did her best to shelter attendees from the drizzle, the weather only kept worsening. William finally decided that the rains couldn’t be fought off with mere umbrellas and gently tapped his wife’s arm to guide her to the door. "We'll go in," he said, before expressing his concern for her health, "Or we'll get you soaking wet."
This is not the first time that the Prince of Wales has had to step in to protect his princess from the rains. Earlier this year, he held out an umbrella over her head as they exited the All Saints Church after Peter Phillips and Harriet Sperling’s wedding. Middleton, wearing a cream dress, looked carefree as she laughed and waved to the onlookers, while her husband shielded her from the harsh weather.
Middleton and William’s visit to Belfast was kept under tight wraps due to security concerns. And, just like King Charles and Queen Camilla’s previous visit this year, it was unannounced. The Prince and Princess of Wales returned to Northern Ireland for the first time since their October visit last year.
