Kate Middleton is known for maintaining a balance when it comes to preparing her children for their future roles, while also giving them as normal a childhood as possible. From raising them away from the spotlight, to breaking royal traditions that could affect their well-being, Middleton and Prince William have always prioritized their roles as parents before duty. The Princess of Wales once reflected on the core 'values' she teaches her children and emphasized their importance in every child’s life.
According to Marie Claire, in 2017, Middleton attended the Place2Be Big Assembly for Children’s Mental Health Week and revealed the parenting practices she has learned from her parents. She said, “When I was growing up, I was very lucky. My family was the most important thing to me. They provided me with somewhere safe to grow and learn, and I know I was fortunate not to have been confronted by serious adversity at a young age.” Middleton stressed how every child “should have people around them to show them love, and to show them kindness, and nurture them as they grow.”
The mother-of-three further opined that kindness, respect, and honesty are 3 values that a child must learn. She said, “My parents taught me about the importance of qualities like kindness, respect, and honesty, and I realize how central values like these have been to me throughout my life. That is why William and I want to teach our little children, George and Charlotte, just how important these things are as they grow up." The Princess argued that these values are just as important as “excelling at maths or sport.”
Middleton has also reportedly put her foot down to protect her children from a certain royal tradition that involves blooding. Typically, when a royal kid goes on their first hunt, the blood of the animal they killed is smeared on their face. According to the Daily Mail, royal author Tom Quinn, in his book Yes Ma’am: The Secret Life of Royal Servants, explained how Middleton refused to allow her children to partake in the hunting tradition. He wrote, “Charles's daughter-in-law, Catherine, Princess of Wales, has put her foot down and insisted there will be no blooding for her children.”
The Princess of Wales also ensures that she and William spend enough time with their children. Following her cancer diagnosis, the Waleses took a break from their royal duties to be with their kids during the tough period. Experts believe that Middleton is a modern future Queen who is using a middle-class approach to raise her kids. As William and his brother, Prince Harry, both grew up while being in the public eye, hounded by the press, Middleton wishes to avoid the same fate for her kids.
