The Prince and Princess of Wales were driven to the BAE Systems' Shipbuilding Academy to meet apprentices and graduates. As reported by the Daily Mail, their pipe-building activity is used as a STEM exercise to teach secondary school pupils. During the race, William was more focused on chatting than building, later claiming he didn't know it was a competition. Meanwhile, Middleton did well with her head start. When one of the apprentices complimented her pipe-building skills, she quipped that it was her experience playing with her children’s toys that gave her the upper hand.

Shortly after the game, the Princess of Wales expressed her admiration for the technology and the number of people it took to build the ship. She marveled, “It's so exciting to see it all come together, all the technology is so impressive. What's really interesting as well is seeing the international interest.” She jokingly admitted that she was still getting to grips with the naval language. She said, “I'm still learning all my naval lingo. There are a lot of abbreviations that I don't fully understand.” As part of the royal tour, Middleton met several children, parents, and grandparents of employees, telling them it was so important for family members to come and see the work after “so much time and effort had been invested.”
