Meghan Markle celebrated her 7th wedding anniversary with Prince Harry on May 19. To mark the occasion, the Duchess shared a mood board on Instagram, filled with pictures of their cherished milestones together. However, one photo soon sparked a firestorm online. Royal watchers accused Markle of photoshopping herself with Harry, pointing out one detail that backs their claims.
Markle captioned her post, “Seven years of marriage. A lifetime of stories. Thanks to all of you (whether by our side or from afar) who have loved and supported us throughout our love story. We appreciate you. Happy anniversary!” As reported by Tyla, in one of the black and white photos, Markle and Harry can be seen facing each other with their noses touching. Eagled-eyed fans, however, pointed out that this might be a doctored image, created using two photos taken during the couple’s New Zealand tour. The Sussexes had visited the country in 2018 and received a traditional welcome on the lawns of Government House. As part of their welcome, they exchanged the hongi, a traditional Māori greeting where two people press their noses and foreheads together.
A side-by-side comparison of the two images soon went viral on X (formerly Twitter), and fans couldn't help but note the same thing. A royal fan commented, “I saw this and immediately knew it was a photoshop job. Why does she do this?” Another fan pointed out, “The earrings...also the hair upon her ear or behind it...it's absolutely the same.” In a similar vein, a netizen penned, “Wow, well done, super sleuth. But really, she had to fabricate that??” As the comments poured in, a fan opined, “The hair on her ear, chin jutting out, and the folding skin on Harry's neck. Pretty sure she's doing this so she'd get the same kind of attention Catherine did for that Mother's Day photo.”
That's not all. Many also alleged that other images on her mood board were also manipulated. A fan said, “That pregnant photo did it for me. 😂😂😂” Meanwhile, another argued, “The photo of Harold with a newborn 'Archie' looks like a fake.” A netizen slammed, “The fake bump, 2 photos together, and the doll Harry is supposed to be looking at. This is getting beyond madness.”
The Duchess of Sussex isn’t the only royal accused of a Photoshop fail. In March 2024, Kate Middleton famously faced backlash for editing herself in a Mother’s Day photo with her three children. The controversy sparked a global stir, prompting major photo agencies to pull the image. Sky News even analyzed the file’s metadata, claiming it confirmed Photoshop use. According to People magazine, the portrait drew added attention as it was the first official image of Middleton since her abdominal surgery on January 16. Following the backlash, the Princess of Wales fessed up and released an apology, admitting that she does “occasionally experiment with editing.”
