Insider Reveals Prince Philip’s Ugly Row with Queen That Nearly Left Her 'Stranded' on a Motorway

Gyles Brandreth recalled the jarring moment Prince Philip threatened to kick Queen Elizabeth out of their car on the motorway.

The 73-year marriage of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip was viewed by the world as the monarchy’s foundation, yet their relationship wasn’t without its fair share of blazing arguments. Behind closed doors, in fact, the Duke of Edinburgh was probably the sole individual on earth who dared to treat the sovereign like an ordinary—and sometimes annoying—passenger. The dynamic between the couple was defined by a clear power divide, noted by broadcaster and friend to the royals Gyles Brandreth, who said in a podcast that while Elizabeth “wore the crown,” the late Duke “wore the trousers,” often taking charge of family decisions.

Speaking candidly on HELLO! magazine’s A Right Royal Podcast, Brandreth highlighted that while the late Queen was the head of state, the Duke took the lead as the head of the household. Occasionally, that authority was paired with a notoriously short temper that even the Queen wasn’t immune to, though she was never one to back down easily. “You wouldn't want to argue with him,” Brandreth said of Philip, adding, “To be honest, you really, really wouldn't. But she did.” To illustrate just how far the late Prince was willing to go when pushed—the broadcaster recalled one confrontation that stands out above the rest.

He shared an anecdote from Countess Mountbatten, who once found herself in a car driven by the Duke, along with Elizabeth. Famously known for being a fast driver, Philip was said to be flying down the road at an “incredible speed,” much to the Queen’s dismay. As the sovereign began ‘yelping’ in fear and frustration at the pace, the Duke allegedly reached his breaking point. As Brandreth recounted, Philip snapped at his wife, saying, “Shut up, woman, or I'll turn you out. Shut up! I'll turn you out on the motorway.” For the Countess, who witnessed the exchange, the idea of the Queen of the UK being left on the side of a busy road was truly jarring. After the ride ended, she advised Elizabeth, telling her that she simply shouldn’t tolerate that kind of behavior.

Countess Mountbatten reportedly told the Queen, “You really shouldn't let him speak to you like that. You know, you're The Queen. He shouldn't really be speaking to you like that.” Being a pragmatist who understood her husband’s stubborn streak, the monarch had a straightforward reason for remaining silent. “But he meant it,” Elizabeth replied, adding, “And I really didn't want to be caught or stranded on the motorway.” Other royal experts have also backed up Brandreth’s observations, noting that his ‘motorway’ threats were a recurring theme in their marriage. Speaking to Fox News Digital, Ingrid Seward noted that Philip frequently traveled at ‘top speed,’ leaving Elizabeth visibly rattled in the passenger seat.

Seward highlighted, “He used to drive at top speed, which made her nervous. She would start taking deep breaths, and he’d tell her, ‘If you carry on breathing like that, I’ll put you out of the car.’” The Queen, however, was far from a silent victim of his temper and had her own ways of holding her ground during their arguments. “The queen gave it back just as much," Seward noted, stating, “He would accuse her of talking rubbish, and she’d speak in riddles as he tried to figure out what she meant.”
