Duchess Sophie just took a page out of Queen Camilla's book with a surprise guest appearance on the BBC Radio 4 drama The Archers to mark its 75th anniversary. A devoted fan of the program, the Duchess secretly recorded her lines at the BBC Mailbox in Birmingham back in May for an episode that aired on July 9. Sophie's cameo follows Camilla's own guest appearance in 2011, when she played herself as president of the National Osteoporosis Society to mark the show's 60th anniversary.

In photos posted by PA Media photographer Joe Giddens on X (formerly Twitter), the Duchess of Edinburgh could be seen standing in front of her script, smiling as she read her lines. She was joined by actors Tim Bentinck, who plays David Archer, David Troughton, who plays Tony Archer, and Susie Riddell, who stars as Tracy Horrobin. She was also spotted chatting with Charles Collingwood, who plays Brian Aldridge. As for Sophie, she channeled her real-life role as the honorary president of Linking Environment and Farming (LEAF) for the show. According to the BBC, the program had already teased the cameo with a synopsis that read, "Nerves are frayed on the day of the Borchester Show, and a surprise guest makes their mark."

Likewise, Camilla had appeared on the show fifteen years ago, playing herself as president of the National Osteoporosis Society. A self-described "Archers addict," she once revealed to actor Sunny Ormonde that she listens to the episodes in "times of stress." As reported by HELLO!, to mark the show's 20,000th episode, the then Duchess of Cornwall sent a special message to the cast: "Thank you for bringing joy, companionship, laughter, tears, compassion, and understanding to your audience across the globe. Here's to the next 20,000 episodes—and, let's hope, the end of Rob Titchener!"

Camilla and Sophie aren't the only royal women to have appeared on the show. Back in 1984, Princess Margaret became the first member of the royal family to make a cameo on The Archers. The late Queen Elizabeth's younger sister played herself during a storyline centered on an NSPCC charity fashion show held at Ambridge's fictional Grey Gables Hotel. Just like Camilla and Sophie, her appearance was kept strictly under wraps until the episode aired, making it a genuine surprise for listeners.
