Charles Spencer Reveals Who He Told About King Charles’ Alleged Diana Remark Years Ago
The Palace pushed back against Charles Spencer’s claim that King Charles told him, “We’ll forget her soon enough,” referring to Diana, soon after he death.
Charles Spencer recently made a series of explosive revelations in his book Swan Song: Diana, My Sister. An excerpt from the memoir included claims about a particularly hurtful remark King Charles allegedly made around the time of Diana’s death. Buckingham Palace pushed back against the claims, saying that the “pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and color memory.” However, Spencer has now revealed who he shared the comments with years ago.
The 9th Earl appeared on CBS Mornings on September 28 and discussed the claims with host Gayle King. When King brought up the Palace’s response, Spencer said, “The part of the conversation they’re particularly upset by is when he said to me about Diana, ‘We’ll forget her soon enough.’ And I know I heard that. I’ve only had two conversations on the phone with the now-King, so it’s definitely the case.”
Spencer then went on to say that he later spoke about the comment with a few people, including a well-known journalist. “I told people at the time. I told Barbara Walters, actually, at the time,” he revealed. Spencer continued, “But they have to gaslight; they have to sort of pretend there’s something wrong with my mind or my memory. There’s nothing wrong with either.”
Walters was no stranger to the royal family. She covered Diana’s wedding to Charles and later sat down with the future King for an interview in 1984. She and Spencer were also seen together at public events, including the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in April 1997, just months before Diana’s death.
The controversy stems from an excerpt of Swan Song published by the Daily Mail, which detailed a tense exchange between Spencer and then-Prince Charles over William and Harry’s role in Diana’s funeral procession. Spencer had objected when the boys were expected to walk behind their mother’s coffin.
The conversation between them quickly became heated, with Spencer recalling that Charles told him, “We’ll forget her soon enough,” referring to Diana.
Moreover, during an episode of The Megyn Kelly Show, the host said a source had told her that Spencer has given different versions of some of his stories over the years. She said, “This source has informed us that Earl Spencer has been long known to have a faulty memory when it comes to retelling the stories that he loves to tell.”
