Charles Spencer Details Princess Diana’s Secret Dream to Escape Britain With Secret Lover
Princess Diana reportedly envisioned a new life in South Africa, far from the pressures of royal life.
Charles Spencer, Princess Diana’s brother, has gone above and beyond to market his new memoir, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister. In doing so, he has revealed unexpected insights into his sister’s life, tragic passing, and complex relationship with the Royal Family. Spencer explained how Diana felt deeply trapped in her marriage and longed to escape after feeling overwhelmingly confined by royal life. According to him, as reported by InStyle, she saw her life as “increasingly unbearable.”
According to Spencer’s book, Diana dreamt of leaving Britain behind to start a new life in South Africa with her secret lover, Pakistani-British heart surgeon Dr. Hasnat Khan, a central figure in the Princess’s life in her last few years. She often envisioned moving with Khan to Cape Town to build an ordinary life far removed from the public eye. Reports indicate her plans were already taking shape, and they reportedly “went as far as seeking help from renowned heart surgeon Dr. Christian Barnard.”
Barnard was the celebrated Cape Town surgeon who made history by performing the world's first successful human heart transplant at Groote Schuur Hospital. Spencer believes Diana hoped Dr. Barnard could assist them by securing a suitable medical position for Khan at the hospital, enabling them to make a discreet relocation. Reflecting on how suffocating her life was in Britain, Spencer wrote that Diana often imagined alternative paths her life could take, describing these hopes as “naive yet impossible dreams.”
Elaborating on her hopes for escape, Spencer shared, “She had come to see for herself if this sublimely beautiful tip of Africa… could provide a haven for her and her heart surgeon lover. Might they, she dared hope, move there together and carve out a life?” He further added, “Diana dreamed that she and her man could live happily, normally, nearby. The other side of the world seemed to offer the possibility of asylum.”
The couple reportedly met in 1995 during Diana's official visit to London's Royal Brompton Hospital and went on to date for roughly two years. Following her separation from the then-Prince Charles, Khan was widely considered her most significant relationship. Though their shared dream of a quiet life abroad never materialized, Khan reportedly continues to look back on their time together with deep nostalgia and affection.
