5 Times King Charles Broke Major Royal Protocols for Queen Camilla

King Charles and Queen Camilla’s relationship was never a conventional royal love story. From their controversial romance to their eventual marriage, the couple challenged several traditions, expectations, and public opinion that opposed their union at every turn. Over the years, Charles has repeatedly advocated for choices that gave his wife a more visible position within the monarchy. Some of these decisions were practical, while others represented clear departures from older royal customs. Rules surrounding marriage were once far more complicated for divorced royals. The King divorced Princess Diana, which at that time was heavily criticized. Then he, despite being the head of the State and the Church of England, married Camilla, who herself was a divorcee, previously married to Andrew Parker Bowles. Their 2005 marriage therefore came after enormous obstacles. Their relationship was heavily scrutinized because of people's affection for Diana. Charles and Camilla did not have the grand royal church wedding traditionally associated with an heir to the throne. Instead, they married in a civil ceremony at Windsor Guildhall in April 2005, followed by a religious service of blessing at St George’s Chapel. While it may look ordinary, the King had to obtain special permission due to his and Camilla's divorced status. The couple also walked down the aisle together rather than Charles waiting for Camilla at the altar. The King decided to walk with Camilla so as not to let her face it all alone, and the move also. Camilla and Charles's relationship was once not widely accepted, but the couple gradually presented a more relaxed image, often indulging in PDA, which ultimately changed public perception. According to royal body language expert Judi James, Charles's public affection towards Camilla "looks like a forming up under potential attack" from anyone who challenges his wife. In conversation with The Mirror, she explained a photograph taken at a reception at Buckingham Palace: "Charles' unusual PDA of placing an arm around Camilla's back, mirroring her arm around his, could be seen as a message in the same direction." Talking to People, Catherine Mayer also argued that Charles became more openly tactile with Camilla after Queen Elizabeth’s death, when members of the family appeared more willing to show emotion publicly.

Charles also supported Camilla in all her decisions to change certain royal traditions. After becoming Queen Consort, Camilla chose not to appoint traditional ladies-in-waiting. Instead, she was given six “Queen’s Companions,” several of whom were her close friends. Their duties were deliberately lighter and less formal than those of traditional ladies-in-waiting.
