Why King Charles Refuses to 'Relinquish' Any Control to William Despite Health Struggle

A growing focus on what role Prince William might play in the future has reportedly struck a nerve behind Palace walls.

As King Charles continues to lead the monarchy while managing his cancer treatment, a growing focus on what role Prince William might play in the future has reportedly struck a nerve behind Palace walls. New reports suggest that the monarch is uneasy and struggling to accept that attention has already shifted to the next generation, even though he is still firmly in charge.

According to Us Weekly, the King is 'not thrilled' by the growing speculation that William is already calling the shots behind the scenes. A source spilled, "He doesn’t feel great about it, as he has finally attained the position he has waited for his whole life. Now that he’s King, everyone is focused on who will come next." Describing William as "strong-minded and stubborn" when it comes to royal matters, the source insisted that he and his wife, Kate Middleton, are trying their best to project a deliberate message of authority.

The insider said the couple’s regal appearance at the state banquet for the German president earlier this month was the prime example of that messaging. They argued they tried to show that "the monarchy is healthy regardless of what happens with [the King]." The insider further shed light on Prince George’s growing visibility at royal events, noting that he has been “tak[ing] on more responsibilities” in recent months, which is all the more proof that “the next generation is already in view.”

Charles ascended the throne in September 2022 after the passing of his mother, Queen Elizabeth, and publicly announced his cancer diagnosis in February 2024. In his latest health update in his speech for Channel 4’s Stand Up To Cancer, he confirmed he has the green light to scale back his treatment next year based on his progress. But was it simply reassuring the public he's well, or was Charles also signaling he's far from giving up the Crown and stepping up?

Well, an insider has confirmed that Charles has not 'relinquished' any authority to his firstborn son yet. “William has his own office and staff separate from the King, and he and Charles work closely together. Charles believes William will do an incredible job as king, and he’s very supportive. When they don’t agree, [William] respects his father’s decisions,” said the source. The source, however, added that William has taken on a 'more serious' and 'very presidential' role. “The Palace is consciously elevating and presenting him in an authoritative manner, anticipating what’s to come.” This has highlighted the fine line the institution is walking on as it tries to uphold the current King while subtly shaping expectations for what lies ahead.
