The Prince and Princess of Wales released a new royal portrait ahead of the German state banquet at Windsor, and it looks straight out of a fairytale. The picture shared on December 3 captured Prince William and Kate Middleton in front of a Christmas tree, just moments before the evening's diplomatic spectacle began.

"Looking forward to a special banquet tonight in Windsor,” they captioned the image, punctuating the anticipation with the German and Union Jack flags. Shot by royal photographer Alex Bramall at Frogmore House, the setting alone carried quiet resonance — a royal residence near Windsor, softly lit by the glow of a Christmas tree with the couple standing close in formal eveningwear. If not for the state symbols, it could have easily been passed off as a Christmas postcard, with the soft holiday glow on their faces.

It was Middleton's appearance that really sealed the moment. For the first time, the Princess of Wales wore Queen Victoria's Oriental Circlet Tiara, the heirloom of considerable size and historical heft. Up until now, her public tiara decisions skewed more low-key. This was easily her most dazzling premiere to date. She completed the tiara with another nod to legacy, a set of earrings once worn by the late Queen Elizabeth. All in all, the look was complete in a glittering blue caped gown by Jenny Packham, accented with the Royal Family Order and the sash and star of the Royal Victorian Order. The many elements were carefully layered together in a visual blend that had modern charm and elegance.

Meanwhile, William wore a full Windsor tailcoat with a white tie to match the moment, topped by the sash of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, the Lesser George, and the neck order of Great Master of the Most Honorable Order of the Bath.

It was formalwear in its purest, ceremonial form, signaling duty. The portrait capped a significant diplomatic occasion, the state banquet marking the first day of the official visit by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and First Lady Elke Büdenbender to the United Kingdom. Hosted by King Charles and Queen Camilla at Windsor Castle, the evening placed William and Middleton in the front and center in Britain's soft-power choreography.

This marks the first state visit to the UK by a German president in 27 years — and only the fifth since 1958. The visit follows Charles and Camilla’s state trip to Germany in 2023.
