When Kate Middleton and Charlotte Unknowingly Repeated a Royal Wimbledon Tradition From Decades Ago

As Wimbledon 2026 is once again capturing the world's attention, royal fans are looking back at some of the most memorable moments from the iconic tennis tournament over the years. One among them is a heartwarming scene from two years ago, when Kate Middleton and Princess Charlotte unintentionally recreated an iconic Wimbledon memory shared by the late Princess Diana and a young Prince William decades earlier. The resemblance between the two generations had been delightful to watch, and highlights how some cherished family moments continue to resonate even after years.
During the 2024 championship, Middleton and Charlotte were photographed together at courtside, instantly reminding everyone of a similar appearance by Diana and William 33 years ago, as reported by HELLO Magazine. Watching the sport from the Royal Box, the mother-daughter duo stood up to applaud the players, and for the special day, Princess of Wales chose to wear an elegant purple dress, while Charlotte wore a navy polka-dot outfit. Similarly, in a 1991 photograph, Diana wore a purple blazer, and William stood beside her in a navy blazer as they clapped for the players.
It's worth noting that both Diana and Middleton have developed a strong association with Wimbledon over the years, thanks to their genuine love for the sport and their regular appearances at the tournament. Their visits have also been very popular for their elegant fashion choices. During her time, Diana was known for her vibrant courtside looks and expressive reactions while watching thrilling matches, and Middleton has carried on that legacy with the same enthusiasm. Additionally, young Princess Charlotte is also beginning to show that familiar excitement.
Meanwhile, last week, Middleton made headlines with her surprise appearance at Wimbledon 2026, but took a different approach this time. Instead of heading straight to the Royal Box, she opted to watch the match between Britain's Katie Swan and American Madison Keys from Court One, surprising many spectators. While there, she was joined by other well-known personalities like Sir Andy Murray and former British No. 1 Anne Keothavong. What was even more surprising was that Middleton took on ticketing duties for a while, delighting the fans present.
Keothavong later spoke about her time with the Princess of Wales and said, "She didn’t stop chatting; it was brilliant. Andy was there as well, and we all have kids [who are of a] similar age, so a lot of the chat revolved around that, and tennis, and encouraging young kids to play and the challenges that we face as parents." Looking back at the past few years, Middleton changed her usual tournament appearance schedule after she started receiving her cancer treatment. In 2024 and 2025, she only attended the finals weekends.
