The One Hurtful Thing Prince Philip Did That Always Left Young Charles In Tears

Royal biographer Ingrid Seward claimed King Charles was often left in tears by Prince Philip’s harsh parenting style.

Most people assume that King Charles's childhood must have been filled with abundance, and it was. But the monarch had his fair share of hardships, according to royal expert Ingrid Seward. In her book, "My Mother and I," the author discusses the challenges young Charles faced and his tumultuous relationship with his father, Prince Philip.

Between royal duties and long periods apart from his parents, he reportedly had very little quality time with Queen Elizabeth and Philip. When it came to his father, Seward claimed those interactions could be especially tough on the young prince, often leaving him upset and in tears. The royal expert said, according to Marie Claire, “The Queen, being averse to confrontation of any kind, would go along with whatever Philip decided, and Charles, unlike his feisty sister Anne, did not have the personality to stand up to his father.”

Seward went on to claim that Charles would often end up in tears after being scolded by Philip over his behavior. Philip’s criticism did not stop behind closed doors either, alleging that he would sometimes put his son down in front of guests as well. She added, “And it was not only when correcting Charles that Philip brought tears to his son's eyes—he would often belittle him in front of guests.”

Seward explained that many people were uncomfortable with the harsh manner in which the late Prince reportedly spoke to Charles in public. According to her, the constant criticism only made the then-young prince become even more withdrawn and reserved over time. She also pointed to a 1969 BBC interview in which Charles himself admitted that Philip was a strict disciplinarian. He said, “The whole time, yes! I think he had quite a strong influence on me, particularly in my younger days.”

Although his childhood was tough, Charles finally stepped away from his mother’s shadow and has won hearts all over the world. The King’s recent official tour to the United States proved to be the most significant move he made during his reign. Hosted by Donald Trump and Melania Trump, he made several key appearances during the 4-day trip. He even attended a block party in Virginia, celebrating the 250th birthday of America.

But what caught the attention of most people was his speech at the U.S. Capitol, where he addressed the Congress members. With humour, he touched on quite a few important topics. He specifically highlighted the long-standing relationship between the U.S. and the U.K., saying, “From the bitter divisions of 250 years ago, we forged a friendship that has grown into one of the most consequential alliances in human history.”

The King strongly backed NATO and showed his support towards Ukraine, “United States Armed Forces and its allies lie at the heart of NATO, pledged to each other's defence, protecting our citizens and interests, keeping North Americans and Europeans safe from our common adversaries.”
