Royal Fans Think Donald Trump Took a Subtle Dig at Harry and Meghan During Recent UK Visit

During a recent press conference, Donald Trump appeared to take a swipe at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle while praising the royal family.

US President Donald Trump visited Scotland on July 25 and wrapped up his business trip on July 29 without meeting King Charles. Despite not meeting the royal family this week, he sang their praises during a leaders' press conference on July 28. Trump, over the years, has spoken fondly of the late Queen Elizabeth and Charles, but hasn’t minced words when discussing exiled royals, Prince Harry, and Meghan Markle. Royal fans are convinced he once again took a brutal jibe at Harry and Markle with a particularly telling comment made while praising the monarchy on Monday.

During a sit-down with Sir Keir Starmer at his Turnberry golf resort, Trump praised the royal family. As reported by People magazine, he said, "Being with Charles, Camilla, and everybody, I've got to know a lot of the family members. They are great people." Taking an apparent dig at Harry and Markle, he added, "In that sense, I think the U.K. is very lucky; you could have people who weren't great people. I don't know if I can say that, but you could have people that weren't." While he didn’t directly name the Sussexes, royal fans are convinced he was taking a swipe at them, especially given his past comments when they stepped down as senior royals in 2020 to settle in California. As per The Independent, Trump said, "I think there was great disrespect to a person I got to know very well and like; the Queen... I thought she was treated very disrespectfully by them [Harry and Markle]...I imagine they broke her heart."

After footage of the press conference went viral on the internet, royal fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to point out Trump's subtle dig. A royal watcher said, "He is the best at throwing shade!!" In a similar vein, another opined, "Yes, this is definitely a dig; he can't stand them, especially after upsetting our late Queen, who he respected so much!" A netizen also echoed, "Donald Trump prizes loyalty. He would think Harry and Meghan's actions worse than despicable." Another agreed, "Trump is a hard worker. I doubt he has much patience with people who want to be rich and famous without doing anything."

In the past, Trump also made his disdain for the Sussexes clear when he joked that he would not deport Harry because the Duke had 'enough problems.' When asked if Harry was at risk of getting a U.S. visa, he told the New York Post, "I don’t want to do that. I’ll leave him alone. He’s got enough problems with his wife. She’s terrible." Trump further remarked that Harry was 'whipped'. Alluding to Markle, he added, "I think poor Harry is being led around by the nose."

Harry and Markle have also taken a swipe at Trump during the 2020 U.S. presidential election, when they indirectly endorsed Joe Biden. In a TIME 100 video urging citizens to 'reject hate speech', Markle dubbed the elections as the "most important election of our lifetime." Harry added, "As we approach this November, it's vital that we reject hate speech, misinformation, and online negativity." As per the Daily Express, though the pair did not outrightly name their preferred candidate, fans believed they were backing Biden over Trump, given their choice of words.
