Royal Expert Claims King Charles's Explosive Remark to Earl Spencer Was Taken 'Out of Context'

There has been a lot of furore about King Charles’ comments to Earl Spencer after Princess Diana’s death. Many have come forward to either defend or criticize the monarch for the shocking remarks. However, royal expert Ingrid Seward presented a different opinion. She believed there could have been a lapse in understanding or hearing Charles’ actual statements due to the ongoing argument at the time.
During a recent interview, Seward explained that she had “thought” a lot about Spencer’s bombshell claims. While she believes there is an “element of truth” to his words, she suggests that the King’s remarks may have been taken “out of context.” Spencer and the then-Prince of Wales, both of whom had a “temper,” were reportedly locked in a “furious row” over whether Prince William and Prince Harry should walk behind Diana’s coffin at her funeral. When Spencer adamantly refused to let it happen, the royal flared up. According to Spencer, Charles snapped, “We’ll forget her soon enough.” However, Seward notes that historical reality proved quite the opposite.
"He might have said something similar to this; he might have said, 'For goodness sake, they have to do this because people are going to forget about us soon enough.' He was worried that Diana's image would not last, and he wanted the boys to be there because he thought when they grew up, they would regret that they hadn't done it. That is my take on it,” Seward said via HELLO!
The royal expert further criticized Spencer for writing such explosive claims about the King, describing it as a “very cruel and unnecessary” move that the Earl “shouldn’t have done.” Seward suggested that the controversial material may have been driven by commercial motives, noting, “The more salacious a book you write, the more it sells for serial rights. He wanted to make a lot of money out of the serialisation.” Even before its official release, Swan Song reportedly reached the No. 1 spot on the Amazon Bestseller list purely on pre-orders, while online retailers like TG Jones reported a 76% spike in sales.
The Daily Mail had published the bombshell excerpt from Swan Song days before its release. The move then prompted an unprecedented response from Buckingham Palace, claiming that “fraternal grief” could “cloud reason, affect judgement, and color memory.” Spencer, however, stood by his claims and accused the King of trying to gaslight him.
Apart from the Palace statement, the royals have been relatively hush-hush about the new book during public appearances. Despite their rift, William and Harry have both been united in ignoring questions regarding their uncle's memoir.
