From books to films, Princess Diana has been the subject of various forms of media and literature over the years. And now, a new book on the People’s Princess has been announced. The only difference is that it will be penned by none other than her younger brother, Charles Spencer. Swan Song: Diana, My Sister is set to release on September 22nd this year.

This is the first time Spencer will write about Diana, and the book will present his perspectives on the ups and downs of her rather tumultuous life. The book’s release date comes almost a year before her 30th death anniversary in 2027. “In September 1997, Charles Spencer stood in Westminster Abbey before a watching world and shared his grief at losing his beloved sister, Diana, in a eulogy that was judged to be one of the great speeches of the twentieth century. Now, nearly thirty years later, he tells the astonishing story of his life with Diana and the tragic week of her death,” the description reads.

Talking about the book ahead of its release, Spencer mentioned that the “requests for interviews” about Diana and having to read “untruths” prompted him to write about her for the first time. He said via the Daily Express, “With the 30th anniversary of Diana’s tragic death on the skyline, I’ve been inundated yet again with requests for interviews about my sister. This has convinced me to write down my own thoughts and memories, once and for all, rather than having the discomfort of again reading the opinions of others, many of which are based on untruths that have become accepted over time.”

Spencer is already a Sunday Times bestselling author for his book, Blenheim: Battle for Europe, released in 2004. He revealed his aim behind writing Swan Song: “The aim of this book is to tell the truth about Diana from her brother’s perspective, just as I attempted to do when speaking at her funeral. As with my eulogy, I want to speak on Diana’s behalf and do so in an openly positive way.” Spencer, along with his nephews, Prince William and Prince Harry, Diana’s former husband, King Charles, and father-in-law, Prince Phillip, had walked behind the Princess of Wales’ coffin during her funeral service

He expressed the hope that the new book will be of interest to people who still “cherish the memory of Diana when she was alive”. He further added, “I would be delighted if those too young to remember her in her heyday feel – after reading this – that they ‘get’ who she really was: a one-off, dynamic character, full of love, charisma and self-doubt, who gave life a hell of a go, and left the world a far better place, despite exiting the stage while still so young.”

This is not the first time that Diana’s close family member has written about her. Harry had widely written about her in his 2023 memoir, Spare. One of the main subjects of the sensational autobiography was the impact her death had left on him and how he still feels her presence around him.
