Prince William Halts Traffic Outside Buckingham Palace for Star-Studded Street Cricket Match
Prince William celebrated the sport that has always been able to bring India and the UK together!
When it comes to royal appearances, Prince William can always charm everyone with his kindness, warmth, and easygoing nature. On this occasion, however, onlookers got to see a playful, competitive side of the Prince of Wales. He turned The Mall, just outside Buckingham Palace, into an impromptu cricket pitch, creating an unexpected but memorable moment. Joined by several professional players for a spirited match, William clearly had a blast. The street knockabout quickly drew a crowd, delighting sports fans and royal watchers alike.
This unique display of ‘gali cricket’ was held to celebrate the upcoming Earthshot Prize ceremony next month in Mumbai, India. Setting aside his royal duties for a moment, the Prince was joined by international stars to take part in the informal yet special sporting spectacle. He shared the pitch with England test captain Joe Root, West Indies legend Brian Lara, and Indian cricket icons Ajinkya Rahane and Sourav Ganguly, all coming together to celebrate the sport that unites the UK and India.
Meanwhile, other celebrated cricket stars like England white-ball captain Harry Brook and England Women’s players Danni Wyatt-Hodge and Nat Sciver-Brunt also took part in the game. Stepping up to the crease himself, the Prince of Wales surprised fans with his impressive batting, pulling off several sharp shots to loud cheers from the crowd. This wasn’t the first time that he engaged in a game to showcase his skills on the pitch; William and Princess Kate previously showed off their cricketing abilities during their royal tour to Pakistan in 2019, according to The Irish Sun.
According to PEOPLE, the Prince’s batting was nothing short of impressive. In fact, he even managed to launch a high-flying shot over the heads of the players, leaving the surrounding cricket superstars gushing and gasping. Reports revealed that the impromptu match was organized by Backyard Cricket alongside the team behind the Tailenders podcast, with Greg James, Sir Jimmy Anderson, and Issy Wong all joining in on the action. Following the game, the Prince of Wales spent time greeting well-wishers, chatting with fans, and posing for selfies. Ultimately, William proved once again that sports remain one of the few universal languages capable of seamlessly bringing people together.
