Prince Harry may be married to Meghan Markle, but that hasn't curbed the media's interest in his ex-girlfriend, Chelsy Davy. The Duke, currently embroiled in a security battle, reportedly mentioned Davy 118 times during a separate court case in May 2023. On the contrary, he only mentioned Meghan five times. Harry blamed the press as a major factor in his and Davy’s breakup.
Harry, who has been fighting for taxpayer-funded security in the UK, in May 2023, had his hands full with another court case. He sued major newspapers for hacking and violating his privacy. As reported by the Daily Mail, his 25,538-word statement for that trial contained 118 mentions of his first serious girlfriend, Davy. In a statement to the court, he said of his and Davy’s breakup, “I had been immature, I hadn't really thought about my actions, and I had made a stupid decision.” Slamming the press, he added, “My mistakes were being played out publicly.”
Harry alleged that The Mirror must have used a hacking method since they reported Davy was furious and had given him a “tongue-lashing down the phone” following allegations that he had been "flirting with a brunette at the party.” Harry exclaimed, “How could the Defendant's journalists know about this?” He also spoke about an article in People magazine, which claimed Davy "blew her top" and had "let rip in a string of phone calls." The Duke again alleged phone hacking and added, “We did speak about it over the phone, but I promised her that I hadn't had a lap dance and stayed with the three other cadets that had girlfriends.”
Meghan’s sister, Samantha Markle, publicly spoke about Harry’s ‘obsession with Davy' with GB News host Dan Wootton. As reported by Royal Insider, Wootton said on the show, “He became very emotional talking about her in court over the last couple of days. He mentions her 118 times in his witness statement, while your sister Meghan is only named 5 times.” In response, Samantha said, “In my opinion, clearly, he’s still in love with her. It seems like she’s the one that got away.” She added, “From what I’ve been seeing on social media, maybe she’s lucky and that’s a good thing.” When asked if Meghan is a ‘jealous person,’ Samantha replied forebodingly, “All I can say is, I’m thinking that probably it’s the war of the roses inside Montecito [where Harry and Meghan live].”
As per the BBC, Harry also mentioned in his 2023 court hearing that he wanted to stop the "absolute intrusion and hate that was coming towards" him and Meghan. He revealed that the immense media scrutiny was the main reason why he and Meghan stepped down as senior royals in 2020.
